They have something like this in America, some insurance companies give discounts to clients who get it installed, helps sort out who was at fault in accidents.

I seem to recall that one of the insurance companies (Aviva?) tried to introduce such a system a while ago in the UK. It supposedly recorded details such as speed, mileage & location and offered you a huge discount for installing it in your car. I got an estimate at the time and the insurance was actually no cheaper.

edited: An even better automated driving recorder with built in GPS module, two cameras (forward and internal rear) and an audio channel called the T-Eye ADR-3000 at £299.95; google it, two detailed reviews, a video clip on YouTube are available. I believe that these are now used by some more imaginative driving instructors - COOL!

Kwik Fit did the same to me.

I made the massive mistake of leaving my Impreza with the local spanner monkeys for tyres and someone asked me why I was going so fast on the dual carriageway at lunchtime.

I complained as much and they denied it. No proof so nothing I could do. Made a complaint to head office and got threatened in town by a group of them for my trouble.

Lesson learned I guess.

Whilst they broke the law, which is not great, none of us would ever do that, other than excessive speed, they werent exactly hooning around smoking the tyres etc.

Looks to me like a test drive loop to see if the water leak was fixed. I guess if they had driven it at 60, handed it back, and the car had leaked again afterwards, it would have just been a return to the garage unsatisfied :D

Hi, I'm the poor owner of the Monaro, just thought I'd answer a couple of remarks here. The Roadhawk is actually not visible from the drivers seat, it sits behind the mirror. You can see it from the passenger seat but behind the mirror there are a couple of things e.g. the automatic headlight detector and the GPS ariel for the satnav. So it's not obvious what it is even from there.

I do have it plugged into the cig lighter socket in the arm rest between the seats. Thats not visible unless you open the arm rest.

It really is a good piece of kit, records G-force x,y and z, speed, GPS and of course video. I records about 20-30 hours of video on the 16GB card I have in there. The reason I bought it was the Monaro is a magnet for 17 year olds in turbo charged saxos who think it's great fun screech away at traffic lights. It happens so often that I thought sooner or later there'd be an accident and I might as well have it on video, for insurance purposes if nothing else.

and no I don't join in, I track the car from time to time that's far more fun than public roads and far less dangerous and of course no worries about the old bill pulling you over.

Yes, the Police turned up asking for the original video files. They show the original 'test' drive both south and northbound (not just northbound like on youtube) and the video of their guy kindly bringing the car home to me at over a ton!

If you will forgive my asking
  • for how long have you had the Roadhawk?
  • how much did it cost?
  • did you research it and any alternatives?
  • I take it that it is very easy to fit?
Sorry to hear that they thrashed your car, hope it did no harm and that you manage to find somewhere else to get it serviced :)

Cheers all thanks for the welcome.
I have found a new garage. The problem is, the Redditch guys handles the lpg side of things. The rest of the car I use Monkfish. So the next nearest LPG specialist is over in Coventry, about 45 mins away. It'll just have to do.

Bought the roadhawk from their website for £280 I think it was, I've had it since about March. No I'm not getting kick backs from them (I wasn't bright enough to ask!)

I did research a few options, one in particular had two cameras one looking forward and one looking into the cabin. Problem with it was the video quality. The others were larger and a lot more expensive, mainly for commercial vehicles I think.

Yes I was really 'annoyed' with them at the time. I knew them well, spent a lot of time with them during the lpg conversion, it was the first one done and they did a fantastic job. I just didn't realise what they were doing when I wasn't there!

Actually Roadhawk produced the high quality video themselves based on the orignal files. Roadhawk records all the data in a special file format. You can't produce a distributable file format directly from them. I used a screen scraper to create the youtube file.

They obviously have a better method of creating an AVI.
