So, you want to keep a pet tarantula?

Why do people love Marmite? (I hate it) Why do people like dogs? (I hate them) Why do people keep snakes (I think they're boring). Simple... because people have their own tastes. If everyone liked the same things, life would be extremely boring.

Personally speaking, I keep tarantulas because I find their morphology, physiology and behaviour absolutely fascinating. Unless you're a tarantula keeper, or know a lot about tarantulas you couldn't even begin to understand why I find them fascinating. Most people who ask me the same question IRL end up understanding why I keep them after a few minutes of conversation. It's amazing how intrigued people are once they've got over the initial 'eugh' factor. My work colleagues now regularly ask me how my baby spiders are :)

They've grown from eggs with legs into 110 little spiders now. They're all running around, causing havok and mayhem wherever they tread. I'm hoping to get rid of half of them to the owner of the male soon. 55 should be a little more managable :)

Didn't make it through the moult as predicted. I could see two abdomens in the dead nymph, but don't know if they were joined or separate. I was hoping they would moult into an awesome mutant, but didn't think they'd make it :) At least it makes the splitting into 50/50 less complicated :)

To Lostkat

Know people have tastes and everything, just was wondering if there was any actual reason for some people apart from just liking them :)

I know what you mean, I find them interesting as well, doesn't mean I like them :) ;)

I just explained why I liked them though  So I answered your question :)

The first bit of my post was towards this

Second bit of my post was towards this

Some are old/deleted/out of date now.

Why do I keep spiders? No idea, always found them interesting basically - plus they don't need huge levels of maintenence, don't smell, wee on the carpet, or cost thousands of pounds.

At work I am known as "Spiderman" and get pumped daily for information. It's quite amusing :D

Ideal beginners spider: Brachypelma vagans (£20 for a subadult female)
Tank: £15 (medium Petpal)
Heat mat: (£10)
Bag of peat from the garden centre: (£4)
Crickets: (£2.50, tub should last a month at a push)

I've just stumbled across this thread and wanted to say... what a truly awesome topic!

Up until a few months ago, I used to hate (house) spiders. I slowly started touching the ones I found, and now can pick up the big house spiders that I find running across my bedroom floor.

I don't think I could ever touch a tarantula though, all the hairs kinda scare me, lol.

Great pic Lostkat, if it isn't just a little disturbing... hope all the little things are ok :)

Thanks, is there a site with any info and pics maybe? Ty :)

I'm going to university soon and I won't be able to take my 2 Ts with me so I am thinking of selling them... Or I may leave the chile rose for my mum to look after and sell the B Auratum.

It is a female and about 4.5 inches across, anyone know how much it would be worth?

Many thanks.
