Socket 939 A64 Dual core - all gone?

I just got my hands on a second hand x2 4400 ccbwe 0543 for £75. Is this a good stepping compared to my Opteron 146 that does 3ghz and beyond?

The price is sweet provided the guy had not maltreated it ;)

I did research for my stepping ccbwe 0551umpw and it came out as Opteron 170 but not X2 4800. While I was reading the 30 and 40 weeks were often mentioned as good for OC. But you would need to provide the last 4 letters as well before anyone can you give you their opinion.

I did not think that you needed anyone to tell you that, but yes, you have pretty good reason to be angry with them.

Are you still waiting for their stock to get loaded?

Yes still waiting - this is what's really bothering me, AFAIK there is no more socket 939 production but the company assures me that they will, at some unknown point, receive more stock. I have no reason to disbelieve them other than my own nagging doubts.

So the reason I am kicking up such a fuss now is that if and when they come back to me and say they can't get any Opterons I will have plenty of evidence of them assuring me this wouldn't be the case.

Just got another email advising that AMD definitely havent ended production of socket 939 dual core CPUs. I thought I read that they had. Anyone have any more info on this?

I have read this as well. Someone posted something about AMD not stoping Skt 939 production. This should only mean that sooner (better) or later you will end up with a nice overclockable Opteron. :)

Fingers crossed that you would get it soon.
Good luck!

Thanks man. I'm feeling a bit more confident - the site in question has just replenished its stock of Opty 165s and 180s, although the 170s are still out of stock, at least theres something coming in though. Gonna email tomorrow and ask if I can have a 165 instead - £116 saves me £14 and sure they will clock pretty much the same.

as you have OC'd your 3700 i am assuming you are competent at overclocking, so why not buy an opteron 165 and OC that, your pretty much guaranteed atleast to OC to 2.6ghz (assuming no other hardware holds you back) even with a poor stepping, other retailers are currently selling them online for £106 (well thats the cheapest i found) excluding PnP

my good stepping 165 i paid 170 for 3 months ago clocks to 3.1ghz on water

Sounds good - I have just ammended my order to a 165 as they have 2 of these in stock at £111 - the higher multiplier would have been useful but I'm hoping my new DFI NF4 infinity board will be able to push fsb speeds well over 300, and I believe it has some good memory dividers for my PC3700 DDR.

I will report back with the stepping etc when I receive it :)

Balls.

Was too late to get a 165, so I'm back to waiting for a 170...

Ho Hum

I am sorry to hear that. It seems that they could get some 170's after all.

Let's hope things are going to change for better.

Do you have the rest of your rig ready?

Kindof, its the rig I'm using now, minus my asrock dual SATA, plus DFI infinity SLI. I have to wait for the DFI anyway, my mother in law is bringing it up when they visit for xmas. Kind of a double edged sword there...

So you still have at least three weeks.

My mother in law will never buy me anything PC related ;). And to be perfectly honest, I would never ask her either. :)

Well it has arrived! I'm at work now so I will install when I get home and report back. Im thinking I will just uninstall the existing CPU, reboot, swap over and install the driver from AMD's site:

AMD Opteron™ Processor with AMD PowerNow!™ Technology Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Version (x86 and x64 exe) 1.3.2.16

I don't think I will bother installing the dual-core optimiser, judging by comments I have read here it either makes no difference or slows things down.

Any comments/observations?

I installed without paying too much attention. It'll post at 3ghz, but I can only get it Windows stable at 2.6 ghz. Pretty good though I think, concidering I'm now part of the dual core club
