Socket 939 so expensive!

I am not sure what you are saying is correct, because if i was to go c2d now, i would be limited to very cheap components only being able to scratch together around £200 for my current components, so gaming performance would not be that far ahead of what i currently have. I'm probably going to stick with this for a while longer because theres no point in upgrading with soo much new hardware coming out daily, plus I have no problem with my system, its just bit laggy in desktop, im not a crysis fanboy so most games run perfect, and I have a small monitor. I guess I should think about forking out for an 939 dual core and overclocking to the extreme.

You need a new board, cpu and RAM. Your GFX card is fine as are all the rest.

You would also need a new install of WinXP , plus licence issues if you on OEM.

If you went for cheap components, 2GB of RAM will cost around 40 quid at max, a P35 based motherboard can be had for around 70 and that leaves you with 90-100 for a new CPU. If you wait for the Intel price cuts around 20 April, I'm pretty sure you could pick up a e6xxx series for around that.

Total : £217-42 plus delivery at current prices.

Of course you could stick with your original idea and only spend 60-80 on a x2 4400/4600 etc :)

£120 for a C2D setup that's guaranteed to hit 3Ghz, and it'll poo all over your current 939 setup.

I was having the same quandry as yourself, and when I jumped over to a budget C2D setup, the performance increase felt incredible :)

I'm gonna stick my 4400+ on the auction site on Thursday. I will put a buyout price on it too.

Only waiting till Thursday to go cheap as its a 5p listing day.

It's on Members Market right now though, if it sells before hand then it goes.

shame u missed the x2 3800's. i got a cheap one of OcUK and has given a big performance upgrade from 3500 single core. i understand why u want a 939 dualcore too...

it's all very well swapping to Core2 but to be honest, for £30 i simply switched processor and now have far better performance. certainly a lot easier

i hope you can find a cheap one somewhere!

You can find 939 3800+ x2's cheap enough... :D

Get one and overclock it... mines runs at 2.85Ghz from stock of 2.00Ghz :)

It holds up with things, like good newer AMD CPUs, but the RAM lags behind DDR2 quite a bit now :(

Think even DDR2 6400 runs at 400mhz x2, whereas DDR1 is half that :( The difference is quite a bit!

Im considering a very cheap upgrade from my 939 system! Got a 3800+ x2, Motherboard and 2GB of ram to sell, then hope to buy C2D cpu, mobo and ram :)

X2-3800 at 2.9GHz here, still really fast and good enough for what it does.

(That said, my E6600 at 3.3 is stupidly quicker at benchmarks and Folding!)

I have access to MM, but not everyone does. If I want to offer someone something for sale directly, is it allowed on this forum?

Or can I PM him with my offer (would that break the rules?)

Alternately should I advertise on MM but mention that someone else might be interested ?

Finally should I rather just advertise it on the auction site and avoid problems?

I have read the FAQ and rules, but can't find this specifically.

Thanks for reading
Modem

you'll get a suspension if it's outside of MM, i got a 2 day one last week :)

thanks for all the comments, because I am so attached to my rig, I am just going to buy a dual core 939 and leave it at that, I am prepared to wait for cheaper prices elsewhere I am sure they will come soon, as for ram - whoever says that 400mhz gets creamed by 800mhz ram in games is wrong, there are many other aspects like CAS latency, of which my XMS has 2-2-2-5 the quickest timings you can have :D if only i had access to members market its soo long getting these 200 odd posts!

Just a minor point, but 2-2-2-5 in DDR1 is the same timings as 4-4-4-10 for DDR2. I'd be willing to bet, though completely inexperienced and opinionated in doing so, that 4GB of DDR2 at 4-4-4-12 and a Core2 Duo would make nasty brown messings over my Athlon 4800+ X2 with 2 GB of DDR1 at tight timings!!

Off to plan that upgrade...

Won't exactly run all over it, mabye in newer titles, but older games tend to be more responsive to tighter latencies, and most of the games I play are not that new (CS:S, BF2142 etc)

Hmmm the older games never really took advantage of the dual core. Are you sure that you will get the performance increase you are looking for?

try the local auction site!!! im also on 939 with a setup i like and i wanted to jump to duel core without breaking the bank, i got my 4400 for £60 brand new and that was a 9 months ago now

just had a look around and there is plenty there, did look to see if same person had some but none now!!!

oh just to mention! a after abit of research i found that the 3800 and 4200 overclock better than the 4400.

There was a batch of 3800's that clocked really well actually :)

Not sure exactly why they clock better than the 4400's but hey.

ok so im not so sure on how so someone could correct me on this!!!
ive noticed everyone else with the 3800/4200 getting much high clocks than the 4400. its something to do with the cache.
have a look here and ** see !
