Socket 939 so expensive!

Hmm I wonder if a 4200 at 3.3 will be better than a 4400 at 3.0 - how much difference does the extra cache really make.

I know in the Intel tests on OCUK the cache did make some difference, but it was negligible.

The last revision of 3800s was a monster clocking batch - guys regularly getting to 3.0Ghz where us early adopters of opteron 165s (previous sweet spot) were only getting to 2.7Ghz. The problem is you need to make sure the chip you are getting is on of the last revisions.

The cache issue was much mooted, but TBH you will see little difference in games. Same with the ram - 2.2.2.5 at 1T will still give you all the bandwidth you need - you won't see much of an FPS difference between that and a good set of 800 DDR2.

I feel your pain - I too am clinging on to my old 939 rig - it's seen me through well - I will probably upgrade over the next few months, but then I'll simply downclock my Opteron and use the rig as a media machine - bargain ;)

EDIT: Not seen 939 4200s running beyond 3.0 without serious effort - you sure those weren't C2D's - Allendales -that you saw - can be easily confused :)

The one I saw I thought was 3.3 but was actually 3.03 (just above the 4400 on the table below). BUT there are 4200's that did more as well, but I have no idea if they were under water or air or whatever ...

Yep - the one at the top will be under phase (-19), and the other are more than likely under v.good water, bear in mind also that those are probably not stable clocks.

well thanks for all the help, I actually managed to pick up a 3800 X2 for £25! so i am going to overclock the s*** out of it! can't wait to see the results and its a good stepping! will let you know how it goes

Cool glad to hear, hope it arrives well and you mannage to do a decent OC.
would liek to see what you can get it too, i could only get my 4400 upto 2.6 at a push so decided to stick to stock !!!

939 is old tech now, its obsolete, the remaining 939 CPU's sell for top money on the bay, people fighting to get all the possible performance from older platform hardware.

You should consider upgrading a lot more because anything 939 will still hold back that graphics card in most situations.
Pretty much what I was going to say.

Intel Core 2 Duo E2200 and motherboard for little over £100 - overclock it to 3.2GHz+ easily.

am jumping off the 939 ship at the end of the month :) getting a e2140/e2160, ds4 motherboard and 2gb corsair/geil ddr2 for around £140 and get some of that back when my old setup goes on the auction site :)

Would you reccomend that to me then? Regarding my sig that is.

Always contemplated changing my mobo cpu and ram...As im on ddr1 obviously, Just dont know how much of an improvement I would get.

Then again I do have an E6700 in the cuboard...?

Nevermind Socket 939. I just noticed how much Athlon XP 3200+s are fetching 2nd hand.

I think I sold mine some time ago at the sweet spot - paid £75 for it, sold it about 4/5 months later just after the last retail stock had dried up, to an american for a pound or 2 shy of £100 - paid for the Opteron 144 nicely :D

Asrock 4CoreDual-SATA2 board and an E2200 with its 11x multi for the win. Then just use your existing hardware, the difference will be sooo noticable.

£43.46 for the board, £55.21 for the chip.

Then just flog your 939 board and chip and that will pay some of the upgrade cost.

Bargain.

Defo, sell it all, DDR1 and 939 sells for top money on the bay, I sold a 2G kit of my old OCZ set for 4 times more than my current set of DDR2 cost.

You'll easily afford a system overhaul by just selling on your older stuff.

Nice one, I'll have to look into it.

Would the E6700 be on par to the X2 4400 I have at the moment? Or what Intel chip would be equivalent to it without an overclock....

Just hassle re-installing everything on my comp, that's all :p

Well got my 3800 x2, overclocked on water to 2.8ghz nicely, managed to keep my XMS XPERT @ 2-2-2-5!! With 3870XT running crysis high @1440x900, for £25 i challenge those of you who claim i could have got a better c2d upgrade for cheaper.

I think it's against the law to own a C2D and not overclock it. You better watch out - the speed police will be after you ;)

Well, that's why I asked my previous question...As I don't overclock :)

Have done, just don't bother with it really. Clocked my 4400 a bit and didn't see any beneficial gains.
