the large commercial PV arrays don't store the energy in batteries, the power is fed directly into the grid. using batteries on large commercial projects would make them uneconomical.

Won't matter anyway. The journalist who wrote the article pulled the blackouts thing out of his arse. Some of the highest periods of electricity usage during the year are after the sun has gone down. Solar isn't really relied upon in the UK - we only use it to tick a box on the green energy checklist.
