Solar eclipse to plunge Britain into darkness - March 20th

Can't wait. I still remember standing outside my work building in 1999 watching the last total eclipse. It really brings home that we're standing on a rock moving through space with other large rocks :)

Same here, I remember doing the same. I was working at a prison at the time and we had some of the cons out on the yard to see it.

We told them to look at it in the large puddles on the yard but of course most didn't.

Except it will go dark.

Except it won't. Unless you're in the Faroes or somewhere. It needs to be 99% before you'll notice any significant light dimming and it won't disappear completely unless it hits 100%. Its very sudden. Was in south devon in '99 where it really did go dark... for a minute and a half. Spookiest thing ever.... and of course it was cloudy.

You can understand why pretty much ever civilisation had sun gods and there corresponding myths and tried to please them. It's a pretty big sight and we know what causes it, imagine it 5000 years ago. It must have been heart stopping.

Guys, how much of the sun needs to be covered before you notice anything? It was overcast during the 1999 eclipse for me, so was hard to judge until near-totality. Stafford will be about 88% this time round.
