Solid State Drives - **** me!

I've got 2 of the new 128GB Crucial SSD drives in my system.
Along with a 1TB Western Digital Mechanical.

My OS and main apps sit on the first SSD.
Games sit on the second.
The mechanical is for "secondary apps" and storage.

Combination works well enough for me.

How easy is that to set up? It is the same sort of scenario I am intending on using for my next build.

Nice price, but don't directly compare them the the OCZ vertex2s, the Inferno has an SF1222 which appears to have significantly lower 4K IOP performance (I'm not sure if you would notice on a single user desktop PC though). Still nice product at an interesting price.
All of the SF1200 series controllers are SF1222. Just Patriot going against the grain with their naming convention.

As far as the IOPS go the SF1200 were supposed to be capped in firmware. You'd have to get a SF1500 drive for the full capability of the hardware to be realised (aimed at server workloads and server prices).

OCZ is quite cozy with Sandforce and was allowed to release an "unlocked" SF1200 drive - the Vertex 2. The Agility 2 is the same drive but firmware locked to 10,000 IOPS.

Following OCZ, Crucial released an unlocked firmware for their Fxxx series of drives. This is not sanctioned by Sandforce but it looks like they will be allowed keep it.

Real world performance difference? It lowers 4K random writes but I doubt there will be any noticeable difference outside benchmarks/server workloads.

Have a look here for benchmarks:

Unfortunately my first SSD experience has not been as amazing as i was expecting, but it has not been a bad experience.

I bought a Vertex 2e 60gb but due to running an old chip-set (Nforce 4) i do not see the speeds most of you do but it has still been an upgrade to my 5year old 160gb drive.

My 120GB vertex2 is arriving tomorrow, I'm pretty excited. Can't help but feel like I'll want another one soon though and I haven't even got the first one :(

I'm very tempted to go for a bigger one and stick the one I have in the laptop.

I suppose my curiosity has been satisfied for the time being and I should really wait for the price of the larger capacity ones to come down a bit, but...

Argh...Must. Resist. :D

not really sure how to take that

i guess its the same as getting used to a certain sized tv screen or getting used to the performance of a car...

once you take a step backwards it seems inferior in every way.

i guess its only worth the money if you can justify it to yourself but i still consider my ssds to be the best, most worthwhile upgrade i have done in 5 years

What's putting me off is that they're too small to have any meaningful number of games on them, yet that's the main reason I'd want one.

i have recently got an SSD just for my games, but even on my single 160gb drive i always had 5+ games installed alongside windows and a load of other apps.
i never got close to running out of space, but i always delete games once i stop playing them anyway,
the downside is that you do have to change the way you manage your data a little but its no big loss really

Ignore my comment above I'm just bored.

I just hate uninstalling games even if I'm leaving settings and profiles intact, as I inevitably come to reinstall them and something goes wrong which means I have to start the game again, which means it gets shelved, permanently.

My habits are such that I like having twenty games installed at once as I have no idea what I'll feel like playing from one day to the next :o.

I'd love a SSD and I don't doubt the difference that can make to the average home PC, but I think I'd be annoyed by as you say, the constantly having to be cautious about what you do and don't install.

That said, I'm building a quiet HTPC and having one in with some NAS in the bedroom upstairs. Then I can just have my OS and my three or so most favourite games on the SSD, with other games or games with shorter loading times installed on the PC upstairs (if it's possible to play games from a server in Windows 7 Home Premium).

Installed my new 120GB OCZ vertex II last night and really really pleased with the difference.

Like others have said, yes you do have to manage things slightly difference but OMG what a difference, well worth it imo!

In what way? Mine should be arriving today and hopefully going to do the build at the weekend.

At the moment I've got as WD 320GB as the boot and programmes drive and all data goes to a combination of 1TB drives (except for what my wife downloads which could go anywhere). From what I've read that should be a reasonable way of handling things with a SSD too?

Basically you need to keep the things you need on the SSD, rather than just putting it there as storage. If you fill it up with everything, you'll get the full drive popup very quickly. They also lose performance when nearly full, it's best to try to keep 10-20% as available space.

In what way?

just making sure you have room for stuff and dont get lazy with cleaning up files.

for instance, when i had mech drives i used to just leave loads of files in the downloads folder and such like
but with an ssd you archive them to a mechanical drive/nas and it means that the ssd is free from clutter.

its good practice if anything ;)
