Raid5 is nice, I've got an 8 drive setup on a decent Hardware raid controller in my file server, but it doesn't really hold a candle to an SSD (or two!) for general usage. Even with an old Q6600 and 8800GTX I have no regrets about dropping the upgrade money on SSD's and removing the mechanical bottleneck. For general usage it's easily the best upgrade you can make.
The key to a fast PC is balance. My PC with a 3 year old CPU is much nicer to use than my mates i7 machine, simply because he's still on mechanical storage.
