Solid State Drives - **** me!

loool mechanical suits me, and if they get too noisy then headphones sort that out lol
i'm not used to having a quiet machine just yet, need the noise to tell me everythings ticking over nicely ;)
 
i still keep all my games on mechanicals (raid 0) as i've got somewhere like 600Gb of games installed... laziness to uninstall them is my problem :p

got 2xintel 80Gb's raided for OS and frequently run programs, which is super fast.

when you get 500-1Tb ssd's, then i'll migrate games on to them, but until then, i'm happy with the performance of my system :)
 
I got my first ssd last week (80gb intel X25-M) and i'm loving the speed everything now operates at. The only problem I have is the size, I'm already down to the last 20gb after just installing the o/s and apps.

@ Seraph - I was like that until I impulse bought one and now i'm glad I did. I know they're expensive and I know they're not very big but as the hdd is the computers bottleneck you see such an improvement all round :D

That will not happen anytime soon. By the time 500GB SSD's cost £75 (current cost for 2TB), 8TB Hdd's will cost even less, and current 2TB hdd's will be ~£30.

Lack of performance, physical size and power requirements will ultimatley cause the death of mechanical hdd's, not capacity or even cost. SSD's already vastly outperform HDD's and that gap will only widen. SSD prices per GB will come down for sure, but so will that of HDD's.
 
i know it's not going to happen anytime soon, thats ok with me,
my rigs in my sig, and it does the job i want, dont need hex cores and 12Gb ram and raided ssds lol :p
 
I was in the camp of 'Not going to buy until they're big and affordable', however after luckily picking up a 40GB Intel X25-V for £50, I'm kicking myself for not getting one beforehand.

Even with my little Intel, the difference is night and day going from a 1TB Samsung F3.

Personally my setup is perfect for me. OS and essential apps on the SSD (14GB left), everything else on the 1TB. Its lightning fast and for the price of a 40GB SSD, there really is no excuse :)
 
Like others have said, you dont know what your missing until you've used one.

Yea those that dont have one will say I can live with the speed/noise etc of a conventional HDD and this included myself until the other day.

When the 2.5 inch 120GB OCZ went on offer here at OCUK at just over 150 notes I went for it. I have to say, I have been blown away by it, figuratively speaking of course :D

Buy one immediately would be my advice, sell your mother if you have too, magnetic storage out, SSD *** lol :p

My boot time more than halved, I boot in about 20 seconds
 
so far imo all they're good for is running your OS on, and the minimum you need is 60GB

I have a 30GB and its great but i always run out of space and had to format twice already, literally everything you install needs to go on another HD

I went from a Raid 0 Setup like yours with two samsung drives to a single OCZ 120GB and the difference was night and day, there's no comparison. I use the old drives for additional storage as you would expect.

For those that mention its best for just OS, personally I don't agree, yea ok games take up valuable space and I guess thats their point, but my games load pretty much instantly now, still amzes me now, absolutely love it.

Obviously if you like to have 20 games installed at the same time then this isnt gonna work lol, but I only have 2/3 at a time then remove.

That's great news :)

I mainly use my PC for photo editing. Having the live files on the SSD along with Photoshop and Lightroom should be awesome!

I too am on an old NF4 chipset, but I have still seen a massive increase in performance from having the SSD.

Was on an old Maxtor 250gb hdd before, SiSoft Sandra reported it at 50 mb/s read.

OCZ Vertex 2E 60gb for OS now - 250 mb/s read and 260 mb/s write!
Even the WD Green 1TB drive I bought as a storage drive manages to beat the Maxtor, something I was not expecting - ~75mb/s read.

Boot into Windows nice and quickly and can use everything immeadiately; no waiting around for the OS to finish loading bits after boot.

Great purchase!
