Sony Ericsson P990i

The bloody thing has been put off yet again. I phoned O2 last week who said they would have it in stock "next Monday or Tuesday," so I phoned today...Sony Ericsson put them off to 23rd October now  Unbelieveable caper this, I've been waiting since this time last year for it and have been holding off a phone upgrade since then.

Probably due to the fact that a new firmware is coming out so O2 quite rightly are waiting for it unlike other operators who are finding the phones arent working as well as they should.

Spawn - how often are firmware updates coming out for the p990i over the last couple of months? Have you noticed steady improvements in the operation of the phone with each upgrade?

Yeah, I know, im on O2 and the constant delay of this phone, not to mention the fact that O2 reception in my house is poor which is why thinking im moving to vodafone...

Do you guys think this is a mistake?

When I think about it logically I spent £670 in 11 months with O2 and the Voda 12 month contract is £50 which totals up to £600.

So far since ive had mine, middle of Aug this yr...there have been 2 major firmware updates and they have improved the phone from when it was first released. There is another firmware out which at the moment is being beta tested before being released.

Just for the record from what i have been hearing over at esato.com forums, the operator branded p990i's have their own firmware which is different to the generic ones. So im pretty sure O2 will probably do the same but wont till people actually have o2 p990i's and they tell us what they have changed.

I have been offered a SPV M3100 from orange to stay with them for free on a £25 per month contract - are these phones any good, i quite like the look of them but never seen or used one before, plus im sick of waiting for the p990i !

finally got round to getting a p990i, and apart from the battery cover being nightmare to get off, its as good and better than my p910i, and in a different league to the n80 i've had the last few months.

I was originally going to get it sim free but in the end got it with vodafone through one stop phone shop, was too good an offer at free on a 12months for £50 pm, and a much better contract than my current o2 one.

Not much vodafone branding that I can see, not even a startup logo, going to try and update the firmware on it, so guess i'll find out whether it has a vodafone specific firmware on it or not.

thats the deal i was going to go for and also get it from one stop phone shop

Seems the p990i from one stop phone shop is indeed a sim free one, just managed to update to the latest firmware (R7A001) using the update service, which I believe network branded handsets can't do as they require their own firmware released by the network operator, which is a bit behind the firmware for sim free models.

So, all in all i'm well pleased.

I've been debating for about 2 weeks if I should for for the onestopphoneshop Voda/P990 £50 deal.

My contract is up with O2, i have my PAC number and im ready to move to voda put there is still a doubt in my mind whether or not I should wait for the P990 to come out on O2.

As it stands at the moment I pay an average of £50/60 on O2 so I guess it make sense to switch

I don't want to make the wrong decision.

Best hurry(ish) with wanting a vodaphone deal like that...

Shares in Carphone Warehouse have fallen by 12% after Vodafone said the retailer would no longer sell its mobile phone contracts.

Vodafone is giving rival Phones4U an exclusive contract to sell monthly phone subscriptions, an arrangement it currently shares with Carphone.

saw that today and was glad i'd got in before this as the vodafone tariff was miles better than the equivalent o2.

I was rather suprised, as I've always assumed cpw to be the biggest independent phone retailer just going by the number of cpw stores i see compared to phones4u.

CPW is the biggest retailer, but from the article P4U offered vodaphone a lower cost commision deal than CPW. Most networks are trying to move away from the expensive commission system to something more sane, so on that basis, this move does make sense.

P990 launched on Orange today and is instock for both new connections and direct upgrades :)

Handset comes in at £49.99 on a £35/month 12 or 18 month tarriff or higher, and upgrade prices depend on banding but range from £249.99 to £49.99 depending on band :)

looks very reasonable prices on orange, especially compared to the prices on the vodafone website.

Dolph, do you know how much branding orange have added to the p990i, as i've got a mate who wants to upgrade to one on orange?
