Sony Ericsson S500 (Review)

Would this phone be a worthwhile upgrade from a Samsung D900? Im due an upgrade at the end of the month and Im torn between this and the W880i.

I read in one review that the slider mechanism was a tad dodgy, is that correct?

Took my phone back to CPW yesterday and they will swap it for a new phone no problems. The only issue is that it might happen again unless I get one of the post week 27 phones.

Or if you get a yellow or black one ;)

If not, and it does happen again, CPW won't have any problems with replacing it again. But it's just an annoyance :o

Same here, I'm put off the w880i by the tiny looking buttons but its such a tiny phone so I guess I could live with that! :D

I'd really recommend you try one in a shop before you buy it (and I don't mean the dummy display models).

Personally, I found the keypad really uncomfortable and not at all easy to use.

IceBus, How do you get the battery cover off, i'm seeming to have problems moving it in the direction indicated. Strange.

*Edit*

I've finally managed to get the cover off, i thought i'd broke it as it's so tightly fixed. Not too clever a design, but great looking phone.

Is there anyway of checking the phone to see when it was made, as of these problems with the keypad etc?

Whoops @ Sony. My phone is meant to be delivered today, hopefully it'll be a post-27 week phone! Is there any way to check?

look for the date (07W27) on the bit of information where the battery goes

does this phone require a mem card to put your own ring tones on or can it be stored in phone memory?

You've (only) got around 12mb internal memory so you can store a couple of mp3s on the phone itself but any more than that and you really need a memory card.

Still loving the phone, I just want my memory card to show up so I can start putting on more mp3s (bleeding Royal Mail strikes - bah). :)

What kind of memory card will i need? would a SanDisk 1GB Micro SD Memory Card work with it?

Nope, you need an M2 memory card (Sony or Sandisk, both made in the same factory as far as I am aware) - I've picked up a 2gb one for ~£25 including postage so they aren't too expensive.

2gb sandisk ones can be had for £17.99 delivered from 2 very well known retailers. :)

My replacement phone is a week 26 phone so I imagine it may suffer the same issue. So far so good though.

I got a 4gb memory card from and online retailer for about £39 inc delivery. it was a genuine Sandisk card too.

Phone just got delivered and gah, 07W24. :( So is it Sony or your supplier that performs the inevitable swap?

Its very pretty though! :D

I took mine straight back to Carphone Warehouse and they swapped it no problems, though I had to wait for one to be delivered from their warehouse.

Typically, I bought mine from an online retailer (buymobilephones.net) so it won't be quite so easy for me, methinks! Ah well, jumping the gun a bit anyway, it may be fine... but I do tend to text more than talk on phones. Ah well, we shall see!

all these phones look lovely but the 2.0 mpixel camera always is a downer for me.. i guess im sticking with my k800i. the n95 is the only logical upgrade with a better camera but i read so much about it being terrible

I'm in the same situation. The s500 does look very nice but with no auto focus and just an 2MP camera, *** seem like an downgrade to me. I'll wait till the k850i comes out. :)

I got one today, 07W20 ;).

Not sure if I'm going to start using it just yet though, still like my f300 :).

If you guys aren't fans of the lack of memory card, the W580i is the same phone but with the added bonus of the Walkman package. Grey ones are available now and other colours are due in Tuesday :)
