Sony Ericsson S500 (Review)

Update, well I took back the S500i (3 of them thus far) and moved onto the W580i which is almost exactly the same phone but does come with a radio although doesn't look as good. However the keypad is now beginning to crack on it also so I'm going to have to take it back as well.

Does anyone have any recommendations of a phone that isn't quite so likely to collapse under my seemingly excessive (pah, I wish) strength? :)

SE P1?
SE K850i when it comes out
SE W960i when it comes out :p

Or dont you want another SE phone? ;)

My second S500i's keypad had started to crack so it will be going back on Friday. i'll not be getting this phone again, most likely go for the W580i, though I suspect it will just be the same.

Oh dear. Not having much luck with this are you :D

Well depends how much you want to spend really. Something like the W810i is a very robust piece of kit, although if you want something with a covered camera lens, have a look at the K550i.

Can you give me an idea of budget?

wow. what do the cracks look like?

They are just vertical cracks down the middle of the number keys which seeps light through when illuminated. Doesn't affect phone funtions at all, it's just annoying.

Very unlike sony phones to be cracking? its shame as this phone is very nice. :(
does the W580i suffer from the same problem?

Mine did, it is more or less exactly the same phone after all. However I'm willing to accept that perhaps me and fashion (of sorts) phones don't get along. Apparantly I'm still the only person in Dundee to report that problem to CPW. :D

Cheers GeForce and Xez, in the end I went for the W880i. The solidity of the keys swayed the decision as much as anything else. ;)

W880i, nice little phone its tiny. Would never be able to use it though even though i have small hands. Good look and hope it doesnt break :p

Is it wrong that I have to put my M2 Memory Card into the adaptor it came with and THEN put the M2 adaptor into a Memory Stick Duo Adaptor I had in order for it to work with my card reader? It doesn't seem to fit otherwise:p

If it works then that is fine. It didn't really work for me. In fact I couldn't get my Memory Stick Duo Pro and adapter to work but oddly it worked when I was connecting it directly through my phone. :)

Got a hairline crack on my keypad now :( Any idea what the deal is with getting a replacement from CPW?

You have had it for longer than 28 days so I think they may send it for repair. However, because this is a known issue you may be able to get them to replace it, I guess it depends if they really want, unless you have insurance?

I replaced my second S500i with the W580i and this new phone is randomly rebooting itself. Looks like another replacement!

Sweet talking the folks in the shop might help but as RoB- says you have had it for longer than 28 days and the policy is to send it off for repair at this point (if it is anything like my experience with a K800i, they will send it off for about 3 weeks and then replace the battery like I requested to begin with). It also might depend on your local shop whether it counts as a known problem since my local shop reckon that I'm the only person to have such problems. Good luck getting it sorted. :)

I've got insurance so hopefully it'll be a straight swap. Going to leave it a couple of weeks as I really need my phone on me between now and then! Will update with how I get on.

i want to upgrade to this phone but its not available on vodafone.
Which network is it available on?

if the keypad cracks, will it be covered under the insurance or the phones warranty?

if warranty, how long is it?

Well it depends, will you be purchasing insurance with it? If so then you can get it replaced under the insurance. If not then you will be reliant on the shop/warranty - for CPW if it is within the first 28 days then they will simply replace the phone for you but after that period it will be sent off for repair usually. It may be different for different retailers though and the warranty should be a year long. :)
