Sony Ericsson S500 (Review)

Cheers for the info although the lack of a memory card isn't a huge issue since they are so cheap now.

On the down side my keypad has cracked already, CPW have promised to replace it as soon as they get more stock in though which is good. Shame the lady didn't seem to know what I was talking about but at least she accepted my explanation of the problem without question. :)

Sounds like my branch. They didn't know anything of the issue but changed it without question.

Anyone know the differences between the S500 and the W580??.. is it like the K750 and W800?... ie not much bar cosmetics and 'Whats in the Box'?!?!?...

I'm strangly drawn toward the W580... but I don't know!..

(btw I originally went for the W800 over the K750, which I still use, but is getting a bit old in the tooth!!) :)

I've just come from a W800i and the s500 cant beat it feature wise and for build quality and strength. As far as i know the W580 is just a walkman phone and it also has a mile calculator or something? Other than that just a bit different looks wise :p

I'll just have to go 'Ibble Obble' when I get the money, and just give em both a trial!..

'poke poke, bend, tweak... Oops is that supposed to come off?'... :D

Pretty much. The W580 has TrackID and Megabass, and a radio, none of which feature in the S500.

Then theres the Walkman software on the W580. Apart from that, not a lot!

Personally i prefer the look of the two w580i models to the s500i. The gloss black is nice, but I don't like the green so much, plus the phone gets filthy so quickly! :( It stills looks hawt tho!

Anyone know if these are coming to vodafone at any point? I`m looking to replace the 2yr old k750i because the joystick thing doesnt work and using keyboard shortcuts is annoying!

Might be worth taking the K750 apart and cleaning the joystick assembly. They usually only tended to go wrong because of dust and other rubbish trapped in there.

As an alternative, have a look at the W810i, K550i and K800i. All good and worthy upgrades from the K750.

Got mine today but I seem to be having a problem with my sim. I slid it in contacts up like it said, it didnt seem to go in all the way but did slide in completely when I pushed the battery in, I assumed this was normal so you could get it out again as I saw no other way of doing so! But when I try and turn it on I get "Insert Sim or view Demo". Am I being stupid and doing it wrong or is the phone faulty or what?

edit: Just had a thought, when I pushed the battery up and held it there (thus push the sim in further) when powering on, it recognised my sim fine so I'm assuming that theres a slight fault with my handset?

edit2: Ok ignore me, you just have to push it all the way which imo is pretty difficult!

I had the same problem ;) Needed to use my old sim to get it to click into place.

Since the last time I posted I got a replacement phone (week 31 and the original was week 25) and the keypad cracked within 4 days so I've got another replacement, haven't checked the week yet but if it happens again I'm going to see if I can't just swap the phone for something else entirely - much as I like the phone it is starting to get a bit irritating having the keypad cracking after using the phone for only a few days. :)

My keypad is still fine. Guess I got lucky?

Hopefully, either that or I'm just way too muscular for the dainty wee keys. ;) Somehow I doubt that though, the shop said that I was the only person that they knew this had happened to which was interesting. :)

after week 27 the keypad is fine. Mines a week 25 and mine hasnt bokren yet and i text a lot. The keypad is very flimsy though.

In theory, yes. In practice, not exactly. My 'new' phone is also a week 31 (same as the last - from 4 days ago which has cracked) and for some reason the "*" and "#" keys don't work already so I'm going to have to take it back in the next couple of days. They worked for about 30 seconds into the first text message I was going to send so apparantly I just destroy S500i phones, more or less by looking at them. :)

I much prefer my W800i to my S500i. It's much better built. I do manual work and have my phone in my pocket and already the plastic strip at the bottom of the phone is lose.

But niether mine or my partners S500i has got a cracked key :D
