*** Sony Xperia Z5 ***

Same, I have a wide angle for my DSLR and it's a fair bit softer at the edges as to be expected. This is softer on the left than it should be, and much sharper on the right edge. Also, after your comments above I've just noticed I didn't change the settings from Full HD 1080 60fps in my video, so the phone is overheating and not even on 4K.

So I have been running my Compact Z5 with the same settings and taking photos every so often and I have been recording for 7 mins before I got my first warning about heat but it is still recording! This is with a plastic case on the phone also.

Edit: Camera app eventually shut down at 9m 12secs.

Ok, so yours is better, that's interesting. I'd still say that 9 minutes is not enough. Something is up surely. Anyone else got a Z5 and can test with these settings?

It's 4k,it is what it is. The dozen or so people who will actually use it for more than the experimentation will have to deal with the fact it's extremely processor intensive to just watch, never mind record.

I was recording at 1920x1080 @ 60fps, check the video. I meant to choose 4K for the video but didn't for whatever reason. The Z5 overheats in manual mode at 1920x1080 @ 60fps after 3 minutes use. :(

Well just over 17 minutes no overheating only stopped because my battery is going low

6.27gb that video took

:D

haha, no fair! I just got it out the box again and tried in standard 4K mode with standard steadyshot. I got about 3 mins before it overheated. :(

Tried it with the light on (flashlight) which is displayed on the screen as an option for 4K recording I might add. Got about 28 seconds before it shut down! :D

8 mins doesn't seem that bad, it's unlikely I'd personally take videos that long. Problem being is that this is in October in the UK, what's it going to be like in the summer outdoors on a semi warm day?

I use GPS (Strava) for tracking my runs/biking and things. That heats the phone up a bit, if I then decide to do a quick video of a friend doing a jump or something while Strava is still running in the background it's probably going to shut down pretty quickly and miss the shot. Hopefully it's launch software glitches and with some updates all will be well but I'm not prepared to hang about to find out which is a shame because the hardware and build quality looks and feels so good (especially coming from my plasticy Nexus 5 :) ).

Just done 10 mins of 1080p 60fps, no warnings. Can't see GPS being a problem, just noticed most apps can be moved to sd card.

Nice.

Do you even own a 4k TV or monitor for it to matter?

Nope but the overheating happens in 1920x1080 @ 60fps which does matter. More to the point, don't advertise and give users something which is fairly unusable and advertise it so they'll part with their money, as it's a 'nice to have thing so will influence purchasing decisions if you're on the fence between devices.

GPS running in background with video recording in the foreground is going to shut my Z5 down in about 10 seconds probably. I've probably just got a dud so we're comparing different experiences which is never going to work. You'd need to be using my particular unit to have the same experience as I am.

There are others online reporting similar issues so it's not completely isolated, no idea on the ratio of less than stellar units vs normal units though.

I think even the S6 is restricted to 5 mins max recording time on the more intensive recording options. Tests showed the s6 processor getting hotter than the Z3+!

I may be wrong on the restrictions though.

God knows what that pinging is then, it's not what you think it is?

By any chance do you have cards in the same pocket? next to the phone?

On my nexus i had a issue where my visa was on the back of the phone and this started to trigger NFC which makes a ping noise every time.

Also made the jump and ordered the phone today, arriving tomorrow :o quick delivery by Carphone.
