I searched for a thread on this beforehand, but couldn't find one. If there is and I missed it just close this one down.

Theres been a pretty horrific train crash just outside Santiago de Compostela in Spain. More than 130 people have been injured, with at least 78 confirmed killed so far. The video in the link actually shows the moment the train derails. Pretty shocking!

Yep, saw that video earlier. It's really shocking.

Definitely looks like it was carrying too much speed through the corner but a chap on the radio this morning was saying they have computer systems with built-in failsafes to stop this happening, even if the driver tried to go too fast.

I can't think of words to describe this tragic incident. Condolences to the families of the dead.

I don't quite understand why? Surely he has a schedule to stick to? Was the train running late and the drivers expected to make the time up?

as said above. surely there are fail safes to stop this????

also how did the driver not die or be in a state to say what he did???

The video seems to show the rear carriages ploughing into the wall and the front one continuing on and not taking as much damage.

Interesting quotes from the driver:

"I'm going at 190!"

"We're only human! We're only human!"

"I hope there aren't any dead because it will weigh on my conscience."

When you look at trains you would think they are built to last crashes like that and protect the people inside.

I wonder what sort of damage and injuries the people inside had to die from the crash and what can be done to protect them next time it happens even at this speed.

Crazy speed to be doing on that bend - but even worse the driver broke the speed limit which is obviously there for a reason.

For comparison purposes, 190km/h is about 118mph and 80km/h is about 49mph. That's like doing motorway speeds (70mph) in a 30mph zone.

There's an awful lot of potential energy when you've got 200 tons of train doing nigh on 200 mph. There's not a lot that's going to stop it.

If it's true that the driver was doing 2.5 times the speed limit then it begs the question why we even still have train drivers?

RIP.

I would say for most blunt force trauma to the head, some may have died through severe internal injuries with broken bones penetrating vital organs.
