Spanish Football 2011-2012

Madrid look weird in red.

Benzema's first goal was technically absolutely incredible.

Benzema didn't score. If the keeper didn't take him down, it would been masterful. The build up and passing was sublime.

Watching Barca now, they really aren't the same team from last year. Real Madrid could take this league and CL this year.

I watched the video against Valencia, don't care about them pumping 9 men :p

OH, I thought you meant tonights game. Sorry.

Chances of Villa staying at Barca come next season? He needs to be the focus point of a team, not a wing man. He has said he dislikes how everything is played through Messi. Villa last season was good but this season he has struggled.

Barca go 1-0 to Getafe.

Can see them losing this one. Horrible horrible Barca tonight. wow.

Strange season from Barcelona. They can go from magical to ordinary in the space of a few days. Real are a shoe-in for the league imo as Barcelona's scoring options, barring Messi aren't delivering. Can see them winning the CL though as they can still perform in big games.

With El Classico only two weeks away defeat to Getafe will go a long way to handing Madrid the title. They made a huge mistake buying attacking players in the summer when defensive cover was absolutely essential.

The issue is the lack of goals. Messi has 15 and Fabregas is next up with 5 and Villa/Xavi on 4. OTOH Real have Ronaldo on 16, Higuain on 12, Benzema on 7.

Haha, gutted Barca. I want Fabregas to do well there, but I'd be more than happy to see Madrid lift the league title this year and see Busquets and co get dumped out the CL by a hard-working, tactically astute team.

It's not that they need defensive cover, they've always been weak in defence, they are having more games where their gameplan isn't working. The best teams in the world eventually run out of idea's and get a bit stale, its happening more and more often to Barca in the past season or so, they had a bad spell last year, and maybe a worse one this year.

Christ, as I was typing Messi hit the bar and then a good save at the end.

Guardiola inherited a team that was the best in the world, at their peak, with really not a whole lot of pressure from the rest. Now Barca are under more pressure and Guardiola isn't seeming to be able to turn around not great performances.

Ibra actually worked VERY well for Barca, just didn't score enough, Eto'o was stunningly good and getting rid of him was a horrific mistake, getting rid of Ibra was even worse. Villa is a good striker but they aren't using him really as they should.

Guardiola, I guess as he buys more players the team is more his, and its not working as well. Fabregas was a good buy though, he's been exceptional, Sanchez/Villa, meh, especially for the money.

On a side note what is with Fortune, I think he'll last less long than Adebayor lasted for the BBC at the world cup. Did anyone see him after the Real game finished the main guy asked him a question and Fortune just didn't say anything paused for like 10 seconds then kept answering questions he wasn't asked, and talking gibberish, and the main guy was moving the conversation along by suggesting an answer for him.

Who would that be then, Real Madrid have been anything but tactically astute under Mourinho, big games against Barca........ kick everyone, stay in our half, pray, cheat, pray some more, and dive I think was the sum of their tactics.

It would be good for football really for Barca to not win, then again, if they lose and decide to spend big to get even better........ :(

For me Busquets has never been good enough for them, but he was good enough while no one was really pushing the rest of the team. Villa isn't a left winger, and they tend to focus far to heavily on Messi. I think when Fabregas plays his/Messi's interplay is truly excellent, and Fabregas seems to spread the ball a bit more evenly/widely. They tend to be the Xavi to Messi to Xavi to Messi to Xavi show these days.

They've scored 38 in 13 games which is better than last season

Bar the 2-2 draw to Valencia they've dropped points whenever Puyol hasn't played. Mascherano and Biscuits both provide excellent cover when Pique's out but they can't cope without Puyol.

Edit: Majority of games they drew or lost last season didn't involve Puyol either and they didn't learn from it and buy cover.

While I hate Busquets as a person, as a player he's actually pretty tidy, I'd be curious to see his pass completion rate. He rarely gives the ball away (tends to fall over as if fouled when he does) and does start quite a few of their moves off by finding a pass to Iniesta/Xavi/Messi which then leads to a goal.

There's a few vids on YT like this (obvs a biased Barca fan) but he gets more praise from his team-mates and other players than I realised.

As for defending under the cosh... well, not so great perhaps.

If Barcelona don't win anything this year after signing another one of the best midfielders in the world in Fabregas, they should sell him, he's clearly cursed :p

Whenever? or only, that was game 13 tonight, Puyol has only played 4 games, they've won 8, drawn 4 and lost 1.

Also Puyol missed a huge wedge of the season last year, they managed to win a few titles last year though without him.

Though at the end of the season after months out he played 3 Real madrid games in a row, and was an unused sub in the 4th game against them, then he played the final few mins in the final :p Its pretty nuts that anyone could ever play or be named on the bench against another team 4 times in a row :p

That's a low blow for Barcelona, looks like teams are starting to read their gameplan.

Victims of their own success I feel atm. Their pre-season was awful from a preparation point of view, too much travelling and not enough rest. I think quite a few of the players could use a break and as pretty as their football is, as the Spain game showed, if you're not firing at 100% you can hog the ball and still lose.

They have scored heavily in a few games but in nearly all those games they let in no goals. It's not strange for Barcelona to let in goals however they usually just reply by scoring more however this season they just haven't been able to response- a little too much success for these players and the hungry isn't quite there?

Also Puyol is a better leader than he is defender so if there is a connection between Puyol been out and Barcelona struggling it could be a lack a driving force.

and RM have a 6 point lead at the top. This might actually be an interesting season in La Liga. Last season, it was done and dusted in Jan.

I think a lot of the trouble is the Barca players are looking leggy! They don't play with the same speed at the moment. They play A LOT of the same players over and over they have long seasons play a lot of games and are going to get burnt out.
Think last season a bunch of those players played most of the season, the world cup and everything else on top, not much of a break and back on it this season.

They lack the depth a lot of the other clubs have (in terms of big well name established players already not the midfield factory that is the La Masia).

Look at how much quicker they played when they went 1-0 behind and almost scoring.
They do need defensive cover and they need to be able to rotate more, which with the signing of Fab and Sanchez who unfortunately was getting some good form and then a few weeks out does at least give them a few more options.
