Spanish Grand Prix 2011, Circuit de Catalunya- Race 5/19

Read a quote from Button i think saying that the new upgrades make the car look sexy ...

That's exactly what they said after the car was first unveiled, earlier in the year and that version of the car turned out to be a lemon. They then made radical changes, effectively using a less advanced version of the car, which turned out to be faster.

Button is extremely bullish about the new upgrades, but until they try them out on the track, they won't have any idea where those upgrades will land them. Also consider that every other team in F1 will also be bringing along some upgrades. I have to say that I am sceptical when a team brings so many new upgrades, all at once. This usually doesn't work out well.

My eyes are actually on Ferrari. I think their methodology of making incremental improvements is the right way to go about things and Ferrari are bringing the 2nd set of upgrades to this race, after introducing a few new parts in the last race (which netted Alonso a solid 3rd place). A lot also depends on Alonso. Right now he is not in top form, but we all know that when he does hit top form, he should be able to outscore every other driver on the track (just as he did last year, in the 2nd half of the season).

I still can't see past RBR absolutely dominating this race, especially if Vettel can lead on lap1.

Yay races at normal times!!

Shame its Barca, they really shouldn't test here and race here... But if nothing else this is the biggest test of DSR + KERS, if it doesnt do anything sensible here nothing can save this track (unless the put the corner onto the back straight back to how it was).

Oh cheers to Acid like always :) there's a type-o on the driver changes title

"Jenson Button is hopeful he and McLaren team-mate Lewis Hamilton will be able to compete with Red Bull in Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix."

I would say that comment is pretty bullish, especially when you consider that RBR have dominated the season so far.

His statements as you've quoted are cautiously optimistic, "hope to compete" doesn't equate as extremely bullish or as you've revised, pretty bullish.

And to remind you that Vettel was actually running in 3rd behind Hamilton, before he broke down and limped home in 3rd (getting overtaken by Alonso). He only slipped in to 3rd when his pit crew messed up.

We all know that when Vettel doesn't lead the race on lap1, he gets bogged down and is a shadow of the Vettel which time trials his way to victory. Webber though, demonstrated just how good the RBR was by finishing the race clear of the 2nd place man, by around half a minute.

Had Vettel led on lap1, he certainly would've been right up there finishing alongside/ahead of Webber. It also didn't help that Vettel had to come in to the pits twice (due to car problems), where all his nearest rivals came into the pits once.

Your turn....;)

Um....I think you just made my point for me....;)

The actual quote from Jenson was

Button said: "We've got a lot of updates here and there's a reasonable amount of lap time there.

"Whether we can fight with the Red Bulls? We can hope. That's the aim."

"The stuff we were going to put on the car in Turkey, makes the car look a little bit more sexy - and faster, obviously. And also the updates we were always going to bring to Barcelona.

"It's not as straightforward as the quickest car in qualifying.

"It's a very long drag down to Turn One here, and even if they qualify half a second in front of us, we can still outdrag them into the first corner, and then the race is anyone's.

Hardly extremely bullish or even pretty bullish. At best I'd say hopeful or even quietly confident. Bullish would be coming out and saying "There is at least a second in these updates and we know we can take the fight to Red Bull".

Bearing in mind there are two races worth of updates being added to the car. It could have course go spectacularly wrong but its also entirely possible for it to all go swimmingly with the minimal data and running that they managed to get with the Turkey parts 3 weeks ago.

Maurice Hamilton making a good point re: the aero rules in the practice commentary. Saying the same things that many of us have been saying for years - FIA, stop dancing around the problem with DRS and KERS rules, and sort out the aero of these cars so they can actually follow each other!

Couldn't agree more.

I've said it before. I'll say it again. Williams need to get rid of Maldonado. He's an absolute waster.

Having been reading only yesterday about Williams and the cars over the years on wiki its so sad of see them where they are now needing a pay driver just to be able to get through the season.

Currently both McLarens are mixing with Ferrari, Mercedes and Renault in 5th and 7th.

Seems RBR are running away with it again. <sigh>

Here's hoping they are just 'fine tuning' those upgrades.
