Spanish Grand Prix 2011, Circuit de Catalunya- Race 5/19

Currently both McLarens are mixing with Ferrari, Mercedes and Renault in 5th and 7th.

Seems RBR are running away with it again. <sigh>

Here's hoping they are just 'fine tuning' those upgrades.

Its practice, the times mean nothing.

Mclaren have LOTS of updates to test, they won't be trying to do fast times yet.

Having been reading only yesterday about Williams and the cars over the years on wiki its so sad of see them where they are now needing a pay driver just to be able to get through the season.

Its really sad :( Nakajima clearly taught them something along the lines that pay drivers with engines are a bad move...

Shame they didnt get the slice of luck on Perez brought to Sauber (or Petrov has brought to Renault) as Maldonado just isnt ready yet and doesnt seem to have the same flashes of skill so far...

Least the millions of oil money keep the team in the sport

Oh of course, I appreciate that and a lot can change between FP1 and FP2.

I was just hoping for a magic cure which would make them competitive instantly. :p

I've just checked and it would appear that RBR are dominating, in exactly the same way that they did last year.

Webber also appears to have found some form.

Lets wait and see if they can carry this advantage into tomorrow's qualifying session.

Quite often, when a team make major changes, it can take a full race weekends worth of data for a team to take a step forward.

What we saw last year was that when a team brought a major upgrade to the track, they would actually take one step backward. The following race however, they would take a step forward (as a result of the greater understanding of the new car parts).

For the above reason, I'm not expecting much from McLaren this race, however, I am expecting to see something from Ferrari.

RBR should dominate though...it almost seems as if their car was designed specifically for this track.

In fairness, dominating FP1 is tantamount to being desperate for a pee, running to be loo, unzipping and letting go only to find that the lid is still down.

When the bit fell off and they send the spannermonkey up the runway int he land rover? :D

Looked like a piece of heatshield to me.

Thats the one, was difficult to see exactly what it was but it did look more like heatshielding that a part of the exhaust. There was a large backfire/pop during the run though so who knows.

Managed to crawl out of bed and whack the TV on just as FP1 started. Not a great deal going on apart from the fact the RedBull is quick straight off the bat again. Looks like everyone seems to share similar thoughts about Maldonado, its still early I guess but he hasn't shown those flashes of what he can do like Perez has or Kobayashi did when they first hopped in a car.

*edit* before I forget, has the Renault sprouted yet MORE Lotus badges?

You are reading a bit too much into it, all the teams are currently several seconds slower then when they tested here in march and about 4s off last years times.

webber had a 1.25, I would expect pole to be a 1.20.x

Too much reading into the P1 times.
I expect Red Bull to qualify well and lose most of the momentum for the race.

After the last race, it seems that Ferrari have realised that they need to make an effort with strategy, instead of hindering their drivers for a laugh.
For this reason, Alonso will definitely win.
First victory of the season and at his home race, will be great to watch.
You heard it here first.

EXCELLENT!!!
I love it when people have conviction in their beliefs.

While I agree with you that Ferrari are likely to make a step forward and may be in front of McLaren this weekend, it is highly unlikely that they can make such a big step forward that they can move within striking distance of RBR, to allow them to use strategy to finish ahead of the RBR cars.

Remember, RBR (based on last year's performance), are fantastic on this track. Along with Hungary, this is RBR's strongest track.

I still like your unwavering support for Ferrari, though. ;)
