Spanish Grand Prix 2012, Catalunya - Race 5/20

Nobody is able to get consistent performance from the tyres so everyone is just going slow. By chance a car, Williams in this case, get the tyres into the right window and come from nowhere to be race winners.

This argument would hold water if there wasn't a 10 degree temperature difference between Saturday and Sunday...

So suddenly everyone is able to design a car that is as good as a McLaren/Red Bull/Ferrari-BS. Nobody is able to get consistent performance from the tyres so everyone is just going slow. By chance a car, Williams in this case, get the tyres into the right window and come from nowhere to be race winners.

going slow? They aren't going slow compare q3 times from sat with last year. Just 0.8 slower, not bad for such a loss of downforce.
The rules have been very static and where the big guys have engineered more than the midfield have been banned.

Not getting consistency? They are different from last year but they are consistent. The perfomamce issues are not tyres.
Rember rbr dominance, was the gap at every race 1second a lap? No it was from -~0.3-+1.5seconds. Different cars suit different tracks/temps and when there perfomamce is so evenly matched and combined with mclaren and Williams throwing it away it's no surprise. Then ontop of that Ferrari have caught the front runners with a large update.

theres a conspiracy thread over at autosport with qoutes from that hembrey guy that make it all sound rather suspect as hes always refering to the show and saying "were in the entertainment business"

they think pirreli are either giving some teams the magic tyres or the consistency is so crapy some people will get good tyres while others get rubbish ones which would explain why some teamates struggle with bad tyres some weekends

It's not as daft as it sounds the FIA seem intent on making F1 a great spectacle with lots of different winners and unpredictability regardless of how contrived it is, I doubt Sky would be interested in F1 without it all.

All it takes is for some tyres to be slightly better than others and give the best teams the worst ones and the rubbish teams better ones, it makes bringing out the safety car redundant and throws up some surprises and the FIA can keep the championship close. ;)

I doubt that is true BUT we all know that the FIA and bernie&co are as bent as a nine bob note.

That's an insane point difference.

Either Massa has gotten a lot worse this season or Alonso is on the best form of his career. Maybe a bit of both. ;)

I bet this weekend has put a real downer on button. Being out qualified by so much and being beaten by Lewis who started last.

He tried Lewis's brake pads remember this weekend, he wasn't exactly going to do well with them right away. I wonder if he will stick with them, if they helped with the tyres, or go back to what he is used to.

Both I think.

Alonso grabbed the bull by the horns and ran with it. Massa just seems to have faded further into the background.

I just don't get why Massa is still there. There is a real chance Alonso could make a bid for the drivers title, but doing it on his own their is absolutely no way Ferrari can win the constructors title. We all know Ferrari aren't afraid to buy people out of their contracts.

The only reason I can see for Massa still being there is that there isn't anyone better available to take the seat?

Massa will be gone for next year I suspect. Although Ferrari will have to find a decent driver who is happy to play number 2, which might be slightly more challenging than we think. I don't think Massa ever truly recovered from his accident.

Alonso is doing very well this year though, he's been given a poor car, but he's doing what he can, and he is a racer. He's doing well.

Same can almost be said of Hamilton. He has had poor luck, and McLaren have let him down. But is, IMO, almost having one of his best seasons.
