Spanish Grand Prix 2014, Catalunya - Race 5/19

As it's massively down on power and hence possible contractual issues.

As far as I know there are performance clauses that will allow them to change supplier, but that wouldn't let them not pay for engines they buy. Either way Renault are saying the money IS owed and hasn't been paid. If Red Bull didn't have to pay due to a contractual clause then Renault wouldn't be saying payments are overdue.

Either way the clause will almost certainly be "if you can't provide an engine that meets certain performance levels you can brake the contract and not continue with Renault the following season".

I'd be surprised, well, shocked, if it meant they didn't have to pay for engines they use, it will almost certainly be a if not happy you get the option to not keep buying them next year.

99.99999% certain it's Lotus, and as above if they are going through more ers/kers/other parts of the engine faster than anyone else they will end up needing more engines to finish the season. If they are struggling to pay for the current ones how will that be come end of the season if they need 8-10 engines for the year instead of their likely budgeted for 5 or 6.

I can't see it being red bull either. Even if it was and Red Bull wanted to part with the Renault power unit, i can't see Ferrari giving red bull a helping hand, and i DEFINITELY don't see Mercedes letting red bull near one of their engines. Both suppliers see that the Renault engine is a dog and the last thing they want to see is Red Bull being competitive again.

Also, I would have though it technically an impossible task to switch engine suppliers mid season. Has it ever happened before in recent history?

There's the Brawn car, which was designed around a Honda engine and got chopped up to fit the Mercedes unit late-on in the pre-season. That's about as close as you'll get in recent times.

The V6s come with sandardised mounting points as does the gearbox. The location of the battery and ERS control unit are also standardized. In theory you could swap engines mid season. The major issue would be adapting the cooling requirements.

It's more than one team that is late on payments to Renault btw.

Renault's F1 PU development is partly funded by Renault but also relies on the teams payments, that's why it's becoming time sensitive.

Morning :)

Hoping both mclaren drivers can make q3 today!

Lewis will get pole and the win.

Not really. Although I used to think so.

Every team puts the same amount in to a Bank account that the FIA can monitor.
If any team needs anything then they tell the FIA what it is and how much ect.

Now if a team turns up with a new part that has not been sanctioned by the FIA they can't race that weekend.

Very simple to do and monitor. No grey area at all.

Then if you are Ferrari you just get Fiat or a Fiat partner to supply you engines at €1 a go.

Ferrari seem way off in sector 3, can't seem to get traction which has to be an issue with the power delivery of the engine. The car seems very unstable.

Anyway hopefully we can get a podium finish tomorrow. Mercedes once again leagues ahead.

Loads of Senna nostalgia at the moment. Typical BBC. Sure he was one of the best of that generation, but they really do milk it.

I don't see them doing any features on Roland Ratzenberger.
