Spanish Grand Prix 2014, Catalunya - Race 5/19

Lol do people never learn at looking too much into practice times?

Combined best sector times for Lewis gives him an overall time of a 1:26:6. Clearly not maxing it out either, I reckon he will get close to 1:25 in qually.

Interesting to note that the GP2 guys are clocking in FP1 times of 1.30 just now - thats 3.5 seconds off the F1 times (just so that the complainers...cant).

:)

Red Bull just announced Vettel won't take part in FP2 due to electrical problem in FP1 - damaged wiring loom.

Was that 1.3second down lap from Maldonado the lap in which he locked up heavily in one corner also? In which case, even on the faster tire that is really pretty strong performance. It's a second ahead of the Mclarens who I presume but can't remember, were on the slower tire earlier in the session. But 1.3 behind a RBR that just did a softer tire pretty much full speed run is really a huge step forward for them, huge.

Yeah, pawned, though Riccy did suggest it wasn't the best lap while the Merc's just seem bang on the money so maybe a bit more to gain for the RBR than Merc with set up... maybe.

But the gap is huge and Hamilton just destroyed Rosberg completely.

EDIT:- not surprisingly maybe, Alonso has been limping around a bit and sliding like crazy on the harder tire, out on the mediums almost 2 seconds down and just looked like he couldn't get the power down at all. Ferrari looks one of the most uncontrollable cars out there when trying to push hard.

Looks like tomorrows qualifying is going to be about who is on pole, Lewis or Nico ? The other teams are miles away.

Go Lewis ! :D

Race pace is insane for Hamilton as well, Hamilton is well up in race pace on Rosberg but compared to everyone else ouch.

Hamilton is doing a 1:30-1:31.5, Rosberg doing 1:31-1:32.5, most others are barely dipping in to the 1:31's, Maldonado was going around at 1:34-35's but most of the others are 10-12 laps into a stint on the softer tire and Maldonado was on lap 22 for the tires so Lotus look like they are thinking about less stops and a very long stint. But losing 2-3 seconds a lap for 10 extra laps doesn't look healthy. Though discounting the Merc's 1-2 seconds a lap slower than the rest and running 10-15 laps longer may not be as bad.

Hamilton seems to have a half a second a lap advantage on Rosberg, 1second a lap on Riccy, 1.5-2 on Ferrari. 2+ on everyone else.

So looking like Toro Rosso didn't put a tire on right, going to get bummed for that.

Hamilton finished up on 16th lap(the tires were I think 5-6 laps older than that, everyone was using the tires they previous did a quali style run on) on a 1:31.0 again so great management of times and faster than everyone else by a significant amount and he obviously went fastest on his fast run so is getting the most out of a pair of tires than anyone else by a mile.

Lotus having huge problems, Grosjean being told to come in as the brakes look unsafe and Maldonado told to come in as they suspect a gearbox problem. Maldonado showing WAY more pace than Grosjean to that point though.

I say that some tracks just suit some drivers. Barca is Maldonado's best race, been very fast here in previous years and looks almost a different driver here to most other places.

Mclown's fastest time in FP1 almost identical to that of FP2 while most other cars moved 1-2 seconds further forwards. Suspected as much, Button has liked to try and find his final pace in FP1 for years and he rarely unearths pace through the weekend where as other drivers aren't pushing till later sessions. That Mclaren barely improved by a hair over 1/10th between sessions is not at all encouraging, and that was different drivers, Button under 1/10th faster than his FP1 time.

FP2 times pretty much echoing the first. Unless the entire grid is sandbagging over a second of pace, looks like another day at the office for Merc tomorrow.
