The sub (if active) and AVR are actually the parts of the chain I'd lean toward buying new.

I think people generally pair the Q-Acoustics you're looking at with the BK Gemini but I've heard mixed things about it, probably due to it being more on the compact side which you might not necessarily want to opt for unless tight on space.

The Denon X2700H I have currently is only a couple of years old and works well with the media setup I have

The sub is active and 100w, probably not that great but at least will tide me over until I find a new one

I’ll use that thread recommended to look for one

Think it's mr wolfs thread with a spreadsheet. Helped me with a guide, and it seemed accurate- I had a sub in the list and the two matched up that I was on the limits of that single sub in the room.

Made a slight upgrade, from a single sub to three
These seem interesting

Personally I'd avoid really cheap floorstanders. I've gone that route myself, the cost cutting results in lower quality speaker overall.

I own quite a few loudspeakers, two way bookshelf sized to big 5 driver floorstanders.

Thanks, will see if I can find it

I get it with the cheaper options, I bought the Canton as they were a cheap offer / recommendation at the time but never really done anything special
Think after some reading I’ll stick with the ones on the av forum

Cheers, will get some ordered to go with the new speakers.

I don’t have a perfectly square shaped room for a home cinema but I’ve got the speakers positioned as best as I can.

TV on the fire place wall opposite the main sofa, front surround speakers in the corners facing the sofa and rear speakers to the side / slightly behind the sofa

Having the front speakers in the corners, is that the best or is it better to have more central eg either side of the fire place

They seem to perform ok where they are as you pick up on the surround sounds when watching a film but just curious

I think a perfect square room is one of the hardest to get right acoustically. So it's good that your room isn't perfectly square :)

AS for the speakers in the corner or nearer fireplace, Try both places and see which sounds best to you. Too close to the corner might lead to some reverb, too far away might sound anemic and the sound stage too narrow.

All just sounds a load of trial and error haha

My advice is don't worry too much about what people tells you should sound nice. It's all so subjective. Like if someone tells you that the ideal speaker placement is in X position but you think it sounds better in Y position, then leave the speaker in Y position. At the end of the day you will be the one listening to them.

Thanks everyone, will take that on board

Been into Richer Sounds today for a demo of speakers. The Q Acoustics was impressive but also large, I just know the other half will moan if I buy them so I tried the Wharfedale DX-3

They were compact, sounded and good and since reading about them very well reviewed. Does anyone have experience of these? Just to have another alternative

I wouldn't go for really small speakers like that, I've got speakers with 4", 6.5" and 7.5"

I would recommend something bigger than the DX 3". They just lack the dynamics of a big speaker.

Thanks, I think it’s getting the balance between size and performance

We’re watching the Hobbit tonight and some of the sound is lacking with the Canton so larger is more appealing

Also smaller speakers means a higher crossover, so you sub does more, and you need a better subwoofer because of that.

And smaller speakers are less efficient, so you need more power for the same spl. ie if I compare the smallest to the biggest of mine, the smallest ones need 2x the power to reach the same spl as the big ones.

I've seen Wharfedale 9.1 (5.1 combo) setups for around £400-500 which include a sub, they're larger than the DX3's and imo are noticeably better but still offer a far smaller footprint than the Q-Acoustics.
