Spec check before I buy

Actually....

Had a thought....

Probably best getting a SATA drive as I have a dvdrw and a dvd on one channel and two old ides on another... = no more space on the channels!

WOOPS! What SATA performs well?

Any suggestions?

There are 2 IDE slots in the P5W board although one not really advertised - Jmicron its called i think. Not much performance gain from going sata if at all, but i believe there have been issues with this board when mixing ide devices and sata.

Edit - again go for the same seagate but sata if your going that direction.

Well I don't really have an alternative do I?

I have a master drive, a dvdrw, and dvd and then 2 additional hd's I'd like to wire up (IDE)...

So that means I'm stumped doesn't it?

Going to have to mix SATA and IDE?

The £114 difference isn't really worth it for the jump from the 6300 to the 6600 is it?

:S

Personally i'd say no the 6600 isnt worth it over the 6300 from an overclockers point of view. And at the same time if you go 6300 go for the DS or DS4 boards, cheaper and will give you better clocks with that cpu.

and i dont think the E6300 jump to a 6600 is worth the £114 as the 6300 clocks extremley well and is a amazing performer

Mix it up a bit?

Stupidness! I suppose I could lose one of my IDEs if mixing ide/sata is going to present problems...?

I quite liked the remote etc... with the mboard so don't really want to change it now unless there is a good one out there that would give me better clocks.

DS3/DS4 or the P5B will give you better clocks.

So the choice is:

An okay clocked 6300 on the P5W DH Deluxe (with nice features)

-or-

Good clock on DS3 or DS4.... (plus no SATA/IDE issues)

What differences are we talkign about here? (in terms of Mhz)

P5W goes to 420/430 ish FSB max times the x7 multiplier of the 6300 = 3Ghz ish, the higher multis of the the 6600 is what makes this board so good for OC'ing them. The most i could get with mine on the 6300 was 420 bang on giving me 2.94 Ghz. With the DS4 and the DS3 people are getting roughly around 500FSB = 3.5Ghz ( in no way guarunteed your particular chip will reach that).

2.94Ghz per core on a 6300 is by no means slow... it blows F62's outta the water ;)

Edit - not just in terms of Ghz but in performance too... the core 2 duo's simply are better performing chips.

I sound like an Intel salesman here, but i've been AMD all the way till Conroes.

That is quite tempting though..... I mean an extra 0.5Ghz (potentially).... for less money...

What are the DS4s like compared to the P5W in other areas?

I have only heard fantastic things about the P5W....

Then again there is that IDE/SATA probelm you mentioned...

I'm also still not sure about AS 5.... don't think I can be bothered.... ironic I know.

apparenlty the DS3's and DS4's are giving clocks higher than 3.0ghz wiv a E6300 if i was to buy a conroe system i would probs get either of them gigabyte motherboards for them reasons alone

The gigabyte boards have as many problems as the asus ones due to being such a new technology really. I'm very happy with my Asus, i love having the extra features you just dont get elsewhere, built in wireless savign you 20-40 for a start... and a remote control? c'mon :p

The AS5 isnt essential, will lower your temps by a couple of degrees. The Ninja doesnt come with pre-applied stuff so you gotta apply the thermal grease whether you get AS5 or not. Ninja grease is a very small clear pouch of generic stuff, no idea hwat the actual make is.

Yep the Gigabyte boards can do this through being able to provide a much higher stable FSB for the lower end core 2 duos.
