Spec me a CCTV System

I've been using a Hikvision 2CD2132 dome camera for a while now (ever since we had a problem child vandalising cars outside my house)..
I use the record to NAS (just need an NFS share at the moment, but I notice the latest firmware has added SMB/CIFS which might be easier for some) and it's been great, I love how the web front end can be used to review recorded footage, and I can easily access it all outside of the home..

Previously I had a 720p indoor foscam, which took all my NAS' CPU to record (using Blue-iris), and the optical quality was rubbish, the Hikvision has very good edge sharpness at 1080p, easily good enough for facial/number plate recognition and it's waterproof..

Can all the Hikvision camera's be views over the internet like the Foscam method? I don't want to have it permanently recording or anything just want to view it live.

My dad's PSU turned up, as did my PoE switch. Unfortunately, the switch deal was too good to be true and it wasn't the PoE version, so it's going back. At least I have the PSU to fall back on.

I'm in the process of trying to get mine up and running but having problems with chinese language and IP addresses.

There's a thread here about changing language settings.

I managed to gain access to the camera via a browser and change the IP address from the default 192.0.0.64 to 192.168.1.22 and can still access via that new IP address. However, the camera remains un-detected via HikVision's tools, e.g. SADP or iVMS-4000.

Fortunately, after changing the IP address to 192.168.1.22 Synology's Surveillance Station (SSS) does now find the camera.

That's as far as I have got for now. Once I've confirmed SSS works, then I may mess around with getting English menus.

i have 3 hikvision cameras installed and running via PoE. however the old opteron (lol) system i have it connected to is struggling to cope when trying to view the cameras via the hikvision software package (cpu 100%)

anyone using an HP microserver to run/record/view these cameras? just need to know if a n54l has enough grunt to deal with 3-4 cameras before finding one

thanks for any info

The software tools couldn't even find my Hikvision even using the software thats meant to automatically find it on the network. I also logged in via my browser and changed the IP address, then used the iVMS software to manually find the camera.

I'm using the onboard storage for mine for the moment but the onboard settings are a maze. Its not as simple as clicking a button to tell it to record 24/7.

I need a few more cameras so I might test your seller this time round. Its a £100 per camera cheaper.

What POE switch are you guys using?

After much head-scratching, I've just ordered a D-Link DGS-1100-08P EasySmart 8-Port Gigabit PoE Switch.

There were cheaper alternatives, like the D-Link DGS-1008P 8-Port Gigabit PoE Unmanaged Desktop Switch, but only 4 of the 8 ports are PoE. I have a habit of buying what I need now, with little or no room for future expansion, and later regretting it; so I spent the extra and bought a switch with 8 PoE ports. I ended up paying £80.

I've got a Synology NAS with Surveillance Station working and it all seems pretty straight forward and offers the features I need. However, it only comes with one license. Each further license costs ~£40 and that is waaaaay too much. I've read that I can write direct to my NAS to a NFS share and this is what I'll be trying next - if I can get English menus on my cameras!

The next hurdle is getting my wife to sign off the installation. She's pretty much refused to allow me to mount the dome on the front of the house (to cover our drive).

All the pictures showing picture quality are invaluable. Anyone willing to show a few the other way around? What the cameras look like installed in their various locations? (I'm looking for inspiration.)

Be aware the PoE is a maximum of 64watts which will result in up to a minimum of 4 ports having power at the full Type 1 budget.

The HikVision bullet & dome cameras are rated at:

Power Consumption: Max. 5 W (Max. 7 W with IR cut filter on)

BTW I received my bullet camera from china, didnt' have to pay duty or anything, so pretty good deal. Camera works great, and I've found a patch on another forum that makes it work with my NFS server (the default firmware didn't work)
So now I'm going to order 3 more, same seller, and do a proper install!

hi, it works with NFS Share. You setup one volume for just the camera's and create the share's per camera within this volume on the synology. The only thing i have found with my camera's is that when the disk space limit is reached overwrite does not work and you have to format the disk again with the camera settings..(format disk is a term they use within hikvision only formats data within the camera share, not the whole disk :)

I'm after some help with making my Chinese camera's menu English.

I've been following these guides:

Solving some NFS issues on Hikvision cameras

Hikvision 5.1.2 Chinese to English Fix

How to Host an FTP Server on Windows with FileZilla

I can telnet into my camera (I'm using SmartFTP).

I can transfer a test file (a jpg) using SmartFTP from 'My Pictures' to C:\ftp (which I set up using FileZilla).

However, I don't seem to be able to copy the davinci file from my camera to C:\ftp

It's this step here:

5.FTP the Davinci file to your FTP server (you can get free software for this, but I used my NAS at 192.168.0.3) - /bin/ftpput -u username -p password 192.168.0.3 davinci.tar.gz /dav/davinci.tar.gz

I'm typing this:

/bin/ftpput -u ***** -p ***** 192.168.1.10:***** davinci.tar.gz /dav/davinci.tar.gz

According to FileZilla, the camera connects (it shows the IP address). After typing the command in the Telnet window of SmartFTP it appears to be 'working', but then after a few minutes - 'Can't connect to remote host: Connection timed out'

I tried FTP'ing to my NAS (I enabled FTP everywhere I think I had to) - but that doesn't work either.

I'm a bit of a n00b and I'm hoping someone can offer some guidance.

EDIT: I just followed this guide and have managed to copy the davinci file across to my ftp folder (on laptop). I'll make the changes, move it back across, then reverse everything I did in that video.

/fingers-crossed

For my reference and anyone else trying this, the hex values in firmware version 5.1.6 (which my camera has) have changed.

The new value you have to change in 5.1.6 is:

8a 30 dd e5 38 a0 9d e5

You'll change it to the be:

8a 30 dd e5 01 a0 a0 e3

That's it and you have english menus and english day of the week in OSD.

My heart was in my mouth the whole time, but I now have full English menus! :D

Now to do it on the other 2 cameras.

Thats the same seller as BadMojo? I'll have to compare the prices with no-ip as I claim vat back.

Anyhow, D-Link seems to be very popular and I might opt for a couple myself as I picked up a Ubiquiti POE Toughswitch to power a couple of Hikvision cameras and Ubiquiti Outdoor AP's but the bloody thing was 24v, not 12v so it couldn't power the camera's which was a useless piece of kit.

Very likely same seller, theres one very obvious one, there.

BTW silly question perhaps, on my Mac in safari, if I try to 'download' videos, it seems to 'download' (theres an increase in a progress field) but I never was able to find the files..(!) anyone has a clue how to download these files?
