Spec me a CCTV System

I've been playing with a couple of raspberry pis. 1080p video, record motion on detection, upload straight to Dropbox, wifi. Send instant notification to my Android phone. Live feed to android app. One of them can see infrared too so I have coupled it with some Chinese infrared leds.

Still testing atm but looking great for the £40 cost (each). Will get some pictures when I get time.

^^^ Indeed the night still capture looks nice but, as you only can capture a side profile, what is it like when zooming in for any sort of facial recognition...?

Can you wire up external PIRs to these Hikvision cameras? If so, how do do you do it / is there a "breakout" cable or terminal blocks inside the camera?

I've read the product manual that alludes to the fact it can accept normally open / closed external alarm inputs but I cannot see the method of connecting them.

Context of the query is I wish to buy a few of these and use external PIRs to obtain a reliable motion alarm instead of the in-built software. I have a couple of old Y-Cam branded cameras that were too trigger happy using software rather than external PIR

Thank you

Mike

I've been following this thread with interest as I've been running a Tenvis 319W (Foscam FI8918W ripoff) for quite a few years but have been looking to move up to something a little more capable with higher resolution.

The Tenvis is a great little camera, dirt cheap and with decent IR and night capabilities but limited by its VGA resolution. I've tried a few 720P cameras from China which can do the resolution but the software and night capabilities were generally awful when compared to the Tenvis for almost half the cost.

On seeing some of the screenshots in this thread, my Hikvision DS-2CD2012-I arrived today. I went with the 1.3MP version due to it being a bit cheaper than the 3MP version, came in at just over £100.

I've got to say, I'm mega mega impressed by this thing. The web interface is superb with plenty of flexibility. The camera itself feels pretty solid and weighty. It's recording at 1280x960 @ 20fps and using 900MB an hour, about the same as the Tenvis at 640x480. It's behind a window so I'll making sure the IR light remains off but I'm looking forward to it getting darker outside so I can see how well it performs at night. Judging by what I've seen in this thread though, I won't be disappointed.

Even overlooking a car park from a 1st floor window the quality is more than enough for number plate and facial recognition, within reason.

Blimey - You're alive :p

Be interested to see some sample footage or imagery if you have time AGW?

How come you have mounted it behind a window is it just to test it?

Rented 1st floor flat I'm afraid. Can't really go drilling into exterior walls, plus it's more discreet hidden behind a window.

We also have contracted window cleaners who come around with brushes on big poles to clean the upper floors and I'd imagine an external camera would get knocked by them.

ha, I was just browsing Motors (I still lurk :p) and saw your name pop up. Are you still on the same number?

No problems, I'll sort some screen captures/clips when I get a minute.

I see you never did get yourself that Rover. Tut tut!

Looking at these cheap cameras on the bay, wondering how good they are for monitoring inside my home from a browser/iphone while I'm away?

My old rover? No it was too far gone mate! They'd stripped it by the time I got to it and I just didn't have the heart to put it back together! I'm not sure if I've got the same number, will drop you a text shortly!
