Spec me a CCTV System

I'm looking at putting together a CCTV system for a small business, they only need 2 cameras, I'd like it to be HD if budget allows. Can I get away with using an old computer (C2Duo sort of thing) and a NAS box rather than buying a dedicated unit?

Thanks

A PoE NVR with 2 x PoE 720p camera's would only be around £200, I'd do that if its low budget.

using ivms-4200 client for playback
if i set the max bitrate in the camera settings to 4mp or over playback gets very choppy
if i set it to 2mp the playback is smooth

it looks like its missing frames when set to the higher bitrate

you cannot playback the recording smoothly at anymore than x1 speed if 4mp bitrate or higher is set

is this a limitation with the camera?

Finally got my 2632 dome installed which was very tricky to adjust the lens and the focus. Had to hold a laptop in one hand and the other to make the adjustments while standing up a ladder.

If anyone can recommend a small handheld device that can be plugged into these cameras using the supplied cable, then let me know.

Anyway, picture is perfect during the day but the nightvison is useless. It wouldn't put a patch on my 2732 bullet which is really good. I don't know what is wrong but at the minute the camera might as well be turned off at night.

I do notice that it only has a 20m IR range compared to the 30m range of the bullet version but I didn't expect there to be such a major difference. I might have to buy another 2732 bullet and stick it up along side the dome and test the two.

Does anyone have a guide to setting up ivms-4200 to record? I seem to have everything right but still can't get any recording to work even to record 24/7. Just won't happen.

Might have to stick an sdcard in it and make life easier.

are you able to post some images of the footage?

Had a good read of this thread, but confused as to what would be best for me.

I live in a town house, i'd like two camera's out the front (one outside front door, and one outside the garage). On the top floor, outside my bedroom window - I'd like a camera facing down that captures my car/street across the road. In the back garden (which is small), I've got two sheds one will soon have power - I'd like a camera mounted on the shed facing the house.

My first thought was to go IP cam, but I don't think my Wifi would be very good across that distance as the router in in the downstairs garden room. But Ip cam might be okay for the camera in the garden? Need night vision on all.

Could anyone reccomend a set of cameras (three, perhaps four) for our new house. Ideally would like to connect up to my HTPC/Microserver rather than a dedicated DVR. Don't mind ordering from China/slow post.

They'd just be use externally on the detached property.

Thanks

I prefer the dome camera alternative, noted in this thread, as it does give a better night image overall than that bullet you noted.

Has anyone got any experience of WiFi ip cameras? Only need 3 cameras and walls are fragile so want to avoid drilling them to have a poe solution.

Just installed iVMS-4500HD on my iPad and the image quality is awful. Not worth using.

Has anyone else noticed this and is there a way to fix it?

Thanks for that. That made a massive difference. I notice in custom I can select fullHD which looks nice.

Yeah with six Hikvision IP POE type cameras (one bullet type and the others dome) and a Hikvision NVR, coupled with a 4TB WD Purple. I also used a Netgear 8 port POE Switch.

Between the best of what I have seen of an Analogue CCTV output to that of digital I would say that you would be exceedingly impressed with the daytime quality and what it can capture when viewing 1080p recorded CCTV material, in good light conditions.

Where analogue (CCD type sensor) seems to do well in comparison to HD (CMOS type sensor) is at night. In some situations and with a good array analogue type camera I used to get pretty good night recordings that HD hasn't greatly improved on.

Overall though the cost for me has been more than worth it with the features and overall quality which is head and shoulders over that of analogue.

The change wasn't really cheap but the results overall have more than compensated for that.
