Spec me a CCTV System

@Cragius - Just noticed your Trust message but I think that general questions about CCTV are best being left to this thread, then everyone can benefit or comment etc on what is written :)

Please read the thread, it is quite short, and that will tell you everything that you have asked, and a whole lot more.

I, like many others here, bought my cameras from AliExpress. You can read about camera model numbers in this thread as well as see example screen shots etc of output.

I do not use home network plugs but have a dedicated Gigabit LAN just for the CCTV system.

This is a good forum for further ideas and advice....

Can anyone advise whether the hikvision can be used as a webcam? We're looking to set one up at work over the beach ( more for the surf school than us), but these look ideal for this purpose too?

Is that a 6mm lens?

Thanks Vimes WOW the difference is massive, Looks like I'm going to have to save up and swap my system over.................................. cant get over that is.

Can i ask why did you isolate this on its own network? was it down to the bandwidth it will use?

Yes it is a 6mm lens.

Looks like a good FOV. I'll probably be getting 6mm and 8mm. 6mm for the side dome cams, similar to your placement and 8mm for bullet cameras facing downwards from the top of the house.

I've seen that Hikvision have ultimate gain glass for their EXIR cameras, so will wait for these to hit Aliexpress/Alibaba.

Looking at the 1.3-3.0 MP differences apart from max image resolution it seems that the lower MP cameras work better in lower LUX light conditions. Since I will have a 4 camera setup with the option to extend to more with an 8 PoE switch I will go for 2MP as HD space and recording time needs to have the best compromise.

3MP - 0.07 Lux @(F1.2,AGC ON), 0 Lux with IR (DS-2CD2T32) Max. Image Resolution: 2048×1536

2MP - 0.01 Lux @(F1.2,AGC ON), 0 Lux with IR (DS-2CD2T22) Max. Image Resolution: 1920 x 1080

1.3MP - 0.01 Lux @(F1.2,AGC ON), 0 Lux with IR (DS-2CD2T12) Max. Image Resolution: 1280x960

Which Hikvision NVR did you go for btw? What benefits does this have over getting a cheap HP ProLiant G7/N54L MicroServer that appear on HUKD's all the time?

Cheers

These look good, did you get any info on pricing ?

Those look quite interesting and wrth taking a note for when they do appear on Ali.

I looked at one of the HP Microservers and something like Blue Iris but after reading as much as I could find I decided to look for a dedicated Hikvision NVR to compliment the Hikvision cameras.
I ended up with an eight channel Hikvision (total bandwidth of 40Mb/s) and as I already had a Netgear GS110TP 8 port POE switch I was covered by using that for power to all 8 cameras over Ethernet. I like how the NVR acts as an extension to the rather full range of commands and options that you get when logging in directly to each of your cameras.
I found it a little difficult to get precise information on how well the Blue Iris software will fully work with the Hikvision cameras, with motion detection recording etc. With a dedicated Hikvision NVR all works well and all features of the camera are supported by it, as you would imagine.

I ended up with the Hikvision 7608 NI-SE/P model and whilst there are others available this one suits me well for my needs. Less than 15w power consumption (without HD) means that it is reasonably green as well. I coupled it with a 4TB WD Purple.

I'm in the process of changing out my securix cameras for the hikvisions. What are they like for fogging up? the securix ones were garbage.

They don't fog-up had mine over the last 6 months, no problems on these frosty mornings recently..

Hi Guys,

having just been broken into I want to close the stable door after the horse has bolted and put some CCTV up. To begin with cameras connected to my microserver but I may move to a DVR later.

Reading the thread, it looks like Hikvision are the brand to go for - but not sure which cameras.

House is about 7m wide, mid terrace so I need to be careful not to overlook next doors (although as one side was burgled at the same time, and the other side's daughter is now too afraid to sleep in their own bed I don't actually think they'd mind that much!). Front camera I don't think a wideish lense would be too much trouble as it's visible from the road anyway, so a bit of overseeing wouldn't be a problem - so 4mm lense for that?

3MB camera a given - disk space is not an issue and quality is required!

Back I think I want 2 cameras, one on the house, on the wall but out of reach covering the back gate and fences. The other on the shed looking towards the house. These need to be narrower field so 6mm would be better? I don't want to attach the cameras to the soffits as I think they would be too high so would see the top of heads rather than facial area?

Does that sound like a reasonable plan? Can someone recommend specific camera models? I'd rather pay a little more and ensure UK firmware and supply if there are any warranty issues etc.

Thanks :)

I need 3 Cameras, with Wi-Fi, don't want to be spending too much, what's recommended? Don't want to just pick anything off eBay before asking.

Thinking about making my own CCTV cameras. Has anyone brought some of the dummy cameras and put a RasberryPi and cam inside it?

Had a quick look online and seems there is tutorials for it so it has been done, but wondering on the practicability and quality.

sounds like a belated plan ;)

Same as when we got broken into several years ago and I fitted analogue CCTV.

As you have read the thread you will have seen samples and camera models and retailers to use - AliExpress.

I would not use a bullet camera over that of a dome, but you will have noted that and why in my previous posts - can easily be meddled with and unless you get the newer EXIR type then their comparable performance to a dome in low light is not that good.

My domes can be reached, mostly, by hand but as they are facing each other they do provide a layered covering effect. I have six fitted in total for 24/7 recording and motion tagging.

I bought my own Netgear POE switch.

I also came away from a microserver idea, and Blue Iris, to that of a dedicated Hikvision NVR, again noted in this thread. I'm glad that I did this.

The placing of your cameras, as you have noted, is very important to at least try and capture meaningful images and not that of tops of heads etc, even though intruders could well be wearing hoodies etc. That is why I was not too bothered about them being a little lower than some would like but they do offer good coverage.

Good luck.

Thanks - I have seen that AliExpress is noticeably cheaper, but I'm still of the thought that an authorised UK reseller would be beneficial for warranty issues etc.

I don't mind using non-dome cameras for the two on the house - and am happy to spend a little extra for the EXIR versions - picture quality is of prime concern. However the camera on the shed probably ought to be a dome as it's a lot more accessible.

Good luck.

Are any import duties/taxes applied, fancy 4 of these, also is the dedicated NVR significantly better as I already have a NAS.
