Spec me a CCTV System

I'm thinking of the below unit as a window into IP cameras from the current 14 camera analogue system we have. Over time we can then add IP cameras and replace the older tech ones. Workable?

I have mixed feelings about ip cameras, the current solution is to run "shotgun" cable to each Camera point but how do you do this for IP cameras, how do they get power?

IP cameras are typically power over ethernet. Some, like the hikvision can also take 12v DC.

The exception being PTZ cameras which require 24v AC or in some cases, PoE plus.

Dear CCTV users,

We are making a TV documentary about home CCTV, the problems or mysteries that people are looking to solve through them and the surprises that they can reveal.

It would be great to talk to you, in confidence, about what motivated you to get the cameras and anything unexpected that they have captured. Please get in touch, [email protected] or 0207 456 0847 and I can tell you more about the programme.

- Captured Road Accidents
- Captured a car and passangers who the Police suspected was driving on our road after committing a murder
- Captured some weird chav who entered our driveway at 5am
- Captured a random fox rummaging through the bins
- Captured another incident where some OAP's got mugged by a guy on a bike
- Was used as evidence when armed burglars broke into my home
- Other stuff too but I can't go into detail.

What motivated me? Well since Greater Manchester Council in all their infinite wisdom knocked down Moss-Side the idiots had to migrate somewhere else and crime spilled across the whole borough so CCTV was needed as the neighbourhood got worse over the years. Thankfully things are getting calmer now.

I don't want to be in the limelight or a part of a programme but I thought I'd share my story.

Can some cameras be configured (by the camera software) to record direct to a Samba network directory/windows share? I want to setup a really simple single camera system to record directly onto an existing file server. But ideally I don't want any additional software on the server itself.

Hope you dont mind the hijack. I started a thread about CCTV equipment for car security

I only require one camera and it doesnt have to be vandal proof as I woukd be mounting it about 50 ft up. I really cant afford a "hi-tech" system but can anyone advice what I would need. I like the idea of the control options of an IP system. Thanks

My budget is only £100/£150 :-(

Most will record to a server via ftp.

I went with a 3MP trendnet dome camera and a netgear POE switch, might be slightly over your budget but it provides everything you require for sub £200

Cheers Will. As I will only ever be using one IP camera is there no other alternative than using a POE switch?

Any chance of a link to the actual camera you use and some stills or clips to demonstrate its quality. Like I said I would be monitoring my car from at least 100m away?

Yes you can buy a POE injector for a POE CCTV camera. They carry the 48v DC to the camera which will automatically frop it down to the required 12v DC.

Take a look on eBay. I have never used them myself but they could be worth a try and offer great savings over the cost of a POE switch, I bought a Netgear version of the POE switch.

BTW Are you 50ft away from the car, or 200 yards as noted in your other thread (from the car park anyway)....?

....Ah you have noted that you are 100 metres away from the car....!!!

At that distance any IR night vision will be nigh on useless and even a 12mm lens will struggle to be meaningful. There is the possibility to have other lens fitted which might be useful but then cost, quality of picture etc might be compromised.

12mm lens would need to be considered at the minimum but I hope that the car park is very well lit. I imagine that a PTZ with a variable type lens would be beyond the cost of what you would wish to pay.

Take a look at Aliexpress and Hikvision cameras. Read this thread, lots of models and points you ask have been covered already. Good luck :)

Just looking for a bit of advice, I am looking at getting some CCTV fitted that will cover the house and the car. I am looking for 3/4 cameras at the moment and they must produce a really good/clear picture at night.

The camera covering the car would have to be vandal proof (or as much as possible) due to the location/garage being a separate building, I don't mind what type the others are. I am guessing the Hikvision cameras are the recommended for the price point I am looking at. Budget per camera is around £150-£180 but depending on quality difference/type I can stretch to a bit more if required.

I have a Synology NAS that I will be connecting them up to, I have 2 free licenses already. Where would people recommend buying the other licenses from? What limitations have you come across when using your Synology NAS?

If you want a clear picture at night, the only thing you can do is have good lighting.

No camera, no mater how expensive, will give a decent picture unless there is good lighting.
