Spec me a CCTV System

Hi all,

Been following this thread here and there and think I'm settled on the Hikvision DS-2CD2342WD-I and a certain retailer who started out selling books still have them for good prices. Everywhere else is +£50 more.

Obviously they do lots of different lens sizes so am wondering firstly, how many I would need and secondly, which lens size?

The garden is about 11m long from the back of the house to the back wall but 3.5m of that is taken up by a conservatory. I'll try to get a picture soon to show this. The garden is also about 10m wide.

Would I need 1 or 2 cameras for this?

They will all be going into a POE switch which in turn will be hooked up to my QNAP TS-879 Pro with Surveillance station enabled.

Also, what's the best thing for the front of the house. I'm guessing mainly I want to be pointing at the front door.

Car port is at the back of the house so I'll run another 4MP turret there too.

Thanks,

Andy

Just ordered 3 of the Hikvision DS-2CD2342WD-I 4mm because it looks like a good compromise. 2 on the back and 1 on the front.

Have a look at this.

Looking for some advise. I want to get a 2 camera Hikvision setup and was thinking of using a synolgy NAS for recording and streaming. I have a micro server running Xpenology and I like the synolgy software but not sure how good the cctv part is? I keep my micro server for local network only so I would need a separate system. I was looking at the Synology DS215j are there any better alternatives I should consider?

Managed to get the software up and running that comes with the camera but it does seem to be a cpu hog. Are there any other better free alternatives that would run on a Windows server?

Milestone seem to have a free version with limitations but it seems a heavy app.

mine only hogs the cpu if you are viewing on the server,
i view mine from a client on my main pc and the server hardly blinks

need a bit of help on a two camera remote installation

already have one camera running streaming to my home server and i would like to add another,
questions are how do i configure the second cam?
do i port forward to say port 81 and 8001 instead of 80 and 8000

thanks

Edit incase anyone's intrested, I did exactly as above worked first try

Looking at Hikvision cameras... A Hikvision DS-2CD2T42WD-I5 is not varifocal as far as I can tell, but for example it says "4,6,12mm"

Varifocal normally have a min and max figure in mm, and fixed normally has 1 size... how come these Hikvision ones have 3 sizes? Is it sort of semi-varifocal, you can somehow choose between the 3, but can't have 8mm (as an example)? Or that they sell the camera with the 3 different fixed lenses?

Thanks!

They are the 3 lens you can buy.

Cool, thanks for confirming

Bought from a 'good' retailer (already ordered the 4mm) so will just return if it isn't suitable

First experience with IP cams and Hikvision, so just want to check out the quality really and see how it goes - people here seem to love them, but an installer I spoke to said he advises against IP cams as only 1 or 2 companies have them perfected, and they're expensive... Maybe Hikvision is who he's referring to though

After recent break ins on the roads around my house i'm now thinking about getting a camera for the patio door. I have a xpenology server set up and would like to make use of that. I was thinking along the lines of an PoE camera.

Any recommendations?

hi all been looking through the thread as im looking for a couple of cameras to go up at home, been thinking of just buying a couple of hikvision cameras and setting them up on my synology box instead of going down the full recorder route.

Just wondered if anyone would be kind enough to recommend any hikvision cameras they have used and had a good experience with

Thanks all

I've been playing with a couple of raspberry pis. 1080p video, record motion on detection, upload straight to Dropbox, wifi. Send instant notification to my Android phone. Live feed to android app. One of them can see infrared too so I have coupled it with some Chinese infrared leds.

Still testing atm but looking great for the £40 cost (each). Will get some pictures when I get time.

how did you put all this together mate? Physically I mean, I'm looking at doing the same but havn't a clue with mounting the IR leds in a case for outside

Im looking to get a camera for my dad for his birthday,

He wants a pzt one with IR so he can watch the birds in the garden. Wants to be able to record, i have a windows server with a load of space it can record to. Is there a decent IP camera that can record to my server with pzt that you can control from your phone or pc?

Cant really find any that really fit the bill. Hikvision look good but i dont think the pzt ones are ip and not sure if its worth going full dvr sincd i have server it can record to.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

I have an old DS212J which handles 2 Hiks just fine... one at 720P, one at 1080P. You now get 2 camera licenses included for free.

I think the J series is lowest spec, I'd go for a 216 as a minimum if I was you. I've had my 212 for several years now and it's been absolutely faultless. They are expensive when starting out but I'd buy another without hesitation.

Just got 2 of the Hikvision DS-2CD2042WD-I bullet cameras and hooked them up to my synology surveillance station and i must say i am impressed. Motion detection set to use the camera and surveillance station picks up the recording just fine. Really impressed, i am looking at adding another 2 cameras to my setup another DS-2CD2042WD-I bullet and a DS-2CD2142FWD-I dome for the front door.

The only downside is the £40+ you have to pay per extra license to use on surveillance station. Had looked at a stand alone Hikvision NVR but i like the low power synology system setup so think i'll end up biting the bullet on the additional £80 for the 2 licenses.
