Heads up for those of us with legit UK or european Hikvision 2xx2 and (maybe others) ip cameras:

ftp://ftp.hikvisioneurope.com/Product Firmware/Front-ends/01--IPC/R0 platform(2xx2)/

v5.4.0 Build 160530 firmware is out and pretty stable- please don't attempt to upgrade using this if you have an imported model as you will lose your language settings and possibly brick - BE WARNED!

Also have to follow full upgrade path 5.2. > 5.3 > 5.4.0

New GUI,loads of bug fixes - worked a treat on my 2332 and 2312 cameras. Enjoy.

Just after some advice on cctv, my sister is building dog kennels and is wanting to have a camera for each dog with up to 30 camera's in total. She would like the owners to be able to check in on their dog using an app and since I'm the one who is into tech she asked me to find out what she needs.

Hi Zoomee

Can I ask where did you buy your cameras from?

Thanks......

I'm in a situation where we have an unruly resident causing us serious grief. I was after setting up a camera and positioning it out of the bedroom window to cover our drive and a small part of the close where he's been spreading glass around.

Got the police involved after a disturbance he caused again in the early hours of this morning (smashing glass, chanting etc.) and the wife and I have had a sleepless night because the guy is a serious nut case.

Thing that I'm most concerned about is that if it covered both my drive and some of the close, I presume I have to comply with the DPA reading what I have on the ICO.

How bright are the lights from the cameras, would they be noticeable from the street in the dark?

On a typical Hikvision camera you will see a 1cm width of a red light faintly on, more so in complete darkness than just typical night/ street light. Some of the EXIR cameras have two lights and others (not liked by me as a generalisation) have a ring or two of lights around the lens and are more obvious.

But if they are noticed then they might act as a deterrent.

As for compliance etc as long as you are not directly looking into other peoples property then there is not an issue with domestic CCTV. One or two of my cameras do look into my neighbours property but after chatting with them they are fine as it offers them a feeling of security.

Police have been more than happy to use some of my recorded material to convict people in the past.

@zoomee - thanks for the heads up and five of my six cameras have been hacked / modified for them to spoof being a UK model, but I'm still wary of changing something that works.

As noted where did you buy yours from.....?

Also found this......seems IR has different wavelengths, the shorter we see a red glow, the longer are completely black

CAN INFRARED ILLUMINATORS BE USED FOR COVERT OPERATION?
Yes. Infrared illuminators come in varying wavelengths from approximately 730nm to 950nm. The 730nm wavelengths will give the normal red glow on the lamp - like a traffic light. The 850nm illuminator will greatly reduce the visible glow. The 940nm illuminator is totally black and is ideal for covert use where no indication of nighttime security is a requirement. WARNING: 940nm illuminator will require a highly sensitive nighttime camera.

Like Vimes said I would think seeing a red glow is good as it acts as a deterrent.

Hmmm, see I've read that if you inadvertently captures peoples licenses plates going to and from the area, you then have to comply with the data protection act?

I can't say I have bothered to even consider that aspect of what I record. And I'm not about to look for a problem that I haven't got.

I do take your point though and appreciate the concern raised.

But, like I noted, I have had several occasions of where the police have called round and asked to review recorded material with no issues related to privacy etc.

I think for anyone normal, it wouldn't be a concern... this guy however, I'm not so sure. If I get woken up with bottles being smashing and football hooligan shouts of Munich again I'll go mad

For me if you are only using it to protect you property and not sharing outside a formal request from the Police you are fine.
Also you need to be seen to try and avoid covering adjacent properties but if you can not avoid there is no issue.

I bet when I sort mine out my neighbours will ask me to add a camera that covers their house as they are paranoid.
