Spec me a CCTV System

You will have to ensure that the hdd's you record to are up to the job.
With the Hikvision set up I have I find accessing the cameras through a web page to be more than adequate.

Do I need any software installed to record the cameras, or can I tell it where to store video just from the web page access (like a network share etc) ?

I use a network video recorder, I was assuming that you could use the web interface to record to a PC also, maybe you can but perhaps someone else here could verify that.
There is software that you can buy, off the top of my head it's called Blue Orchid, that enables recording and playback to a PC hard drive.

Edit: Blue Iris

Hi all.

Semi detached property. Looking at 3 cams - front side and back mounted at the corners.

From reading the thread - hikvision 4mp, exir turret seems to be the play - £114 per unit on Ebay. 2.8mm versions.

Do i just invest in hikky nvr and the connect with cat 6 ? Any advice greatly appreciated.

I have 5 cameras on a detached house. They are all the Hikvision cameras you mention.
I decided not to wire all the cameras to the Hikvision NVR because of the size of the house but instead I use homeplug networking to connect the NVR to the cameras via 2 POE switches, 1 switch serves 2 cameras on 1 side of the house, the other serves the other 3.
The system seems robust enough, I did have to replace 1 camera though as it broke.
Edit: They're not POE switches, just ordinary ones.

Appreciate the response mate - thanks.

@dobbsy

no need for cat6 and cat5(e) is a lot easier to work with

Thanks mate!

I'm now at the ordering stage - my original plan was to buy from china but hearing of lots of issues with grey market cameras. Surely if I go with grey market nvr too shouldn't be too much of a problem? It's pretty much £100 cheaper overal.

3 x 2342 £342
2tb hard drive - £50
7604ni nvr £99.99
Tp link Poe switch £51
100m cat5e £26

Pretty much £600 all in buying from U.K. Reasonable price?

Hikvison have tried to stamp out the grey market

think now better to get everything from UK - otherwise you could end up with incompatible firmware in the future

That NVR supports POE so why do you need a POE switch ?

I want to get a camera for my room so I can watch what my dogs up to and what not. Ideally no more than £100 and would like the best quality I could get. Not really sure what's out there, any help appreciated.

Are those prices inclusive of VAT? Seems reasonable from a quick Google of the cameras.

With that many cameras if you are recording 24/7 youre not going to store that much I imagine, possibly only 4 or 5 days worth (depending on quality of course) I think based on my 6 camera set up with 3TB HDD. Worth checking out Id say.

Unfortunately thats exvat! I think upgrading the hard drives is wise as I would like at least a weeks worth. Internal cameras will be set to motion detection to save on space

@skaif

why do you need that many cameras?
Its for a young persons care home so all communal areas and front and rear

Whore house or crack den, only possible explanations.
Yeah that too

Just realised it's 9 cameras all in and I've managed to get him to price match Amazon so saving around 150 there.
I've been advised to run the cables into the loft and then one cable down to the office.
Any suggestions or recommendations on an 8 port poe switch?

Has anyone tried the outdoor Nestcam? I'm tempted to get a few but it doesn't look like you can run the power leads through an exterior wall. All of the instructions I can find use an outdoor outlet which seems a little pointless as anyone wanting to break in can simply cut the wire.

I've recently installed an IP camera on front of my house over looking garden but for some reason some local scrote/s have taken a dislike to it. Wednesday morning a half empty pop bottle had been thrown towards it, and today an egg has been thrown at it. Both times landed in the gutter of the single story extension below camera.

Unfortunately I don't have any footage as I've still been lazily testing it and currently only have live streaming on my PC and Android app, no recording set up yet until I sort out a home server for it.

Good thread! Had a read through and some great info in here.

I have a NAS and couple of hdd's on there way to me, going to be running xpenology so I can use surveilance station.

Now all I need to decide on is a camera for the front of the house. Looking towards the hikvision as many of you here have mentioned them. Something along the lines of http://www.cctvempire.co.uk/CCTV-IP/Hikvision-IP-Camera-4MP/DS-2CD2142FWD-I

Will I need both the mounting bracket and adaptor it is pictured with? Any other camera I should be looking at? Budget of around £150-£200.

Thanks
