Spec me a rice cooker

From a health perspective don't most folks use brown rice with it's lower GI - white rice is nice but from it's texture it's like mashed potato for GI, or ready-brek.
 
This is the one I picked up in Singapore. Perfect for 1 to 2 persons. 3 people would be fine but 4 is pushing it. Rolls Royce of rice cookers, their smallest size version.
When Mrs. Feek cooks rice, she normally chucks a mug of rice into the pan. There’s always some left which is stuck.

Would a cooker this size be big enough for a mug of rice?

Yes the panda one which I have would fit a fair few mugs worth in.

No, most folks still eat white rice. I have black rice at home even when I want a change but 99% of the time I eat white rice.
For health I think jpaul is right. Most people still eat white bread but brown is still the most popular if you're health conscious.
 
Yes.
I overdosed on rice and had to have to a lay down (still, the chickens won’t go hungry for a while).
Had some good results, but I found that letting it run its course makes the rice a little sticky for my liking.
The only rice I’ve got is some cheap Lidl Basmati, so I’ll grab some better quality stuffs today and give that a go (any suggestions welcome).
That said, it makes rice a bazillion times better than I ever could, and as a plus it has a wee steamer tray to do broccoli or whatnot at the same time :D
Make sure you are washing the rice too.
 
Started reading this on Monday and now I have a rice cooker, the panda one. I was a little concerned about the 1-3 people capacity and nearly went for the next size up but in reality its more than enough for 3 of us to have rice with our meal and its small enough to be easy to store.

I was using a standard steamer which was ok but this is so much better, had a trial run last night with just two cups and the rice it cook was on a much higher level :)

Great purchase, wish i'd done it a while ago.

It depends how much and many mains dishes you have, if you have a "usual" amount, and uses the traditional chinese bowls, 1 plastic cup of rice can easily fill 2 of those bowls up and a little left over. Growing up I only ever have 1 bowl per meal so even allowing for 2nds, or these days rather, I don't need a full cup per person. Even when i am super hungry and do a full cup, i always regret it. 3/4 is enough for me, so 3 cups is enough for 4 people.

Agreed, 3 cups in more than enough for 4 people, no need to buy a bigger one. A lot of the reviews seem to just echo the blurb on the box, ie 1-3 people or suitable for a single person/couple but in reality its good for 4 people :)

I’ve always stuck to 1 cup rice and 1.5 cups water

With lid on entire time, bring to boil, simmer 13 mins, off heat for 7. Makes acceptable rice for me, but having read this thread I’m REALLY intrigued to see how different it is :cool:

I'd definite what you mean by budget as from reading this thread a fuzzy logic one makes sense (great explanation from @Raymond Lin).

Going to assume you may mean a lot less than £90 in which case it will be a 'dumb' rice cooker.

I've always been awful at cooking rice with a pan so have a bog standard cheap rice cooker from Asda I think. It does the job but I do end up with rice burnt to the bottom of the pan.

If you eat the rice often enough I'd spend more. If not that often then don't bother.

yeah 50 quid tops really as it wont be used that much.
 
There are really no big difference between all the dumb rice cookers from like £20 to £50. I wouldn’t get the top end dumb rice cooker. Most of them will say “fast cooking” as a feature, that’s merely the effect of the hot plate on max because it only has 1 heat setting, which is max power. Or keep warm once it’s done.

If you are going to get a cheap one, when the switch flicks go off, do not open the lid, do not touch it, do not even look at it, leave it for 20mins before opening that lid, 30mins even better. It will help the cooking and texture.
