Spec me an LED Torch

Best small not too expensive single AA torch for the old man on his blind, whilst it is dark, slightly tipsy walks home from the pub?

His Romisen I bought him broke. :(

The Romisen MXDL RC-G2 Cree Flashlight Black (1xAA) ?

Pretty much all cheap ones will break if dropped, the rc-g2 has a decent reputation as being reliable and of fair quality.

Have a look on http://budgetlightforum.cz.cc/ and http://www.jayki.com/ for reviews.

Fantastic light and brighter than my Fenix TK12 R5 and just as well built - so much so I'm going to sell my TK12.

How does it compare with the Fenix on the medium power setting? and what Lumen output is the medium setting? I'd imagine that it doesn't last very long on high power?

The Pila charger is the best if you can afford it but ive been using a Ultrafire WF 139 with AW18650's and havent had any problems.

Same here. I've charged my AW 18650 up about a dozen times now and it's fine. Iv'e heard that the charger (or the older version) trickle charges after the battery is full and that this can damage the cell. So as long as you keep an eye on it and remove it when done it should be fine.

been reading about 18650's. Are they really that bad?
As long as you don't abuse them, no.

Any recommendations on safe batteries and chargers?
Pila IBC charger and AW or Redilast cells.

There are many ways to make a lithium ion battery go bang with plenty of flames and flying shrapnel but use them and charge them properly and they are fine.

read the following for damage potential

http://laserpointerforums.com/f53/beware-arctic-battery-explosion-54974.html

and the ibc charger is worth the money as if fully regulated etc not worth mucking around with cheap tat.

Ps 18650's are what is typicaly in side a laptop battery pack.
The pack has speacialy protection circuits to keep them safe.
Loose cells dont usualy thats why everyone recomends AW's cells as they have the saftey circuit built in and also good flame vent control.
The ibc pia charge has more protection and monitors the battery in more ways and better than other chargers. The wf139 charger is good but not as good/safe as pila.

2hrs10mins on high @ 350lumens (otf). Med is about 140lumens. Low is about 25lumens.

I've got an LED torch that is very bright and pretty sturdy, it cost me $1 from a yes, a dollar store!

So roughly a 65p torch, £100 is just crazy.

No it's not.

Reason:-

it cost me $1

I have a fair few $1 specials knocking around, mainly for the kids to mess about with or loaners but to compare them to a £100 torch, as you put it, is crazy.

I am not abandoning AA's! But I have finally jumped on the Li-ion wagon... god help me! All because of the temptation for more throw and lumens.

I must be mad but I have just purchased:

Solarforce Master Pro 1 head
Solarforce L2 body
Solarforce 18650 exentsion tube.

Solarforce L2p in black
Solarforce L2p in grey
+ numerous P60 drop-ins to play with

The prices of the AW cells are nuts, I am not paying £10.50 per cell, on your bike. I am scouting various decent budget brands.

I have purchased a cheap and cheerful charger but have my eyes on the Pila. Anyone know any discount codes for LEDfiretorches?
