Spec me an LED Torch

I posted back at the end of December that I was buying. I didn't, simply because I decided I had a perfectly good, although very old 4 D cell Maglite that was going to last forever.

Today I needed to use my torch, it's clearly been some time since I used it, the batteries were not only completely flat but they appeared to have somehow welded themselves inside the tube. I destroyed it trying to get them out.

So now I need a torch. I don't use one very often but I guess it's worthwhile getting something averagely decent. So, without reading pages and pages of stuff, can anyone make a recommendation please.

Specific suggestions and links where appropriate for torch, battery (or batteries) and charger please. Don't break the bank though, make sensible suggestions.

Assume nothing :)

I have a handful of Eneloops, nothing particularly high power rated. Some old Boots own brand 2200 mAh AAs and perhaps a couple of Duracell rechargeables somewhere.

I have an EA41 with eneloops, happy with it, nice torch.

My dad was impressed but didn't have a rechargeable battery setup so I bought him a Fenix UC40 Ultimate which can be recharged via Micro USB so he can just plug his phone charger in the end.

Who made the original batteries (the onles that leaked into the maglite)?
I had the same thing happen, but because they were duracell batteries, I emailed duracell about it, and they abnk transfered me the cost of a replacement torch, and sent me some vouchers for free replacement batteries. - Well worth a try if you know who made the batteries.

Hi guys

Looks like this thread has gone quiet over the past couple of months, hope you don't mind a bit of a necro with a 'spec me' question?

Basically I've always just used maglites, the little AAA version and the AA version as well.

I've managed to be stupid and break both of my latest AA LED versions as they don't accept NiMH batteries, I have a ton of Eneloops so I need a handheld LED torch that'll accept rechargeable batteries.

It's mainly going to be used for walking dogs in fiends at night so I would like something that can go from a wide to narrow beam. A decent brightness will be good so I'm not stepping on hedgehogs etc., but at the same time I don't want to blind the dogs with it!

What would you guys suggest? I don't want to spend a lot as that's all it for, but at the same time I do like my gadgets and quality tends to be king. I would be looking for two, one for me and one for the missus.

Thanks!

I like my Nitecore EA41, takes 4 AAs and I use Eneloops in it. The interface is nice and logical to me.

The beam isn't adjustable, however the brightness is.

I have a Thrunite TN4A which is similar to the Nitecore EA41, takes 4x AAs and puts out around a thousand lumens. Again, no adjustable beam shape, but very decent throw while still having lots of useful spill! I highly recommend it.

Good call. My understanding is the Thrunite TN4A has more of a flood and less of a hotspot than the Nicecore EA41 so might be more suitable if you want a more spread out beam.

I have the earlier Nitecore EA4W, and it's an awesome torch. I have some smaller torches but for proper outside use, the Nitecore is my goto. As mentioned, there's no adjustable beam, but the throw is amazing. They call it a compact searchlight for good reason!

Thanks for the posts guys, I wasn't expecting such a quick response on an old thread, appreciate it! :D

I think the recommended torches are coming in at £40 and above which is still quite a lot for my use, especially when buying two.

Also, as CHokKA says, if it's like a compact searchlight, that's really good but having thought about it, where we are walking is fairly near some houses so I don't want to disturb people / draw attention to ourselves really.

Would you recommend something that's more towards, say, £20 per torch? Or is that just getting into poor quality territory?

I'm utterly clueless with torches so really have no idea on this subject!

Thanks. :)

I bought a cheap Chinese cree LED torch a couple of years ago, I think it was 5 or 6 quid. It has adjustable beam and 2 brightness modes (and a strobe mode which isn't very useful). I have 3 AAA Eneloops in it and its been a good torch, might be worth a look TheBigCheese if you just want something that works and is low cost?
