Spec me an LED Torch

Thanks for the posts guys, I wasn't expecting such a quick response on an old thread, appreciate it! :D

I think the recommended torches are coming in at £40 and above which is still quite a lot for my use, especially when buying two.

Also, as CHokKA says, if it's like a compact searchlight, that's really good but having thought about it, where we are walking is fairly near some houses so I don't want to disturb people / draw attention to ourselves really.

Would you recommend something that's more towards, say, £20 per torch? Or is that just getting into poor quality territory?

I'm utterly clueless with torches so really have no idea on this subject!

Thanks. :)

Also, on the subject of the Nitecore EA4, the output is adjustable so if you're worried about it being too bright when out at night, you can adjust the beam output to a lower output when near houses and that won't create much of a problem. I do this with mine all the time. The beam is fairly focused so you shouldn't cause too much bother anyway. I didn't notice that you were after two torches though. That might get a bit expensive!

In that case, something like the Fenix E05 or the Nitecore T2S are very good torches for the money. They are both powered by AAA batteries and kick out around the same beam. The Fenix is adjustable at 8, 25, and 85 lumens and up to 45m. The Nitecore is adjustable, at 2, 20, and 50 lumens and 28m. The Fenix is more powerful than the Nitecore but I have a Nitecore torch so I can't speak for the quality of Fenix on a personal level. I do know that they're very good though. The runtime on the Nitecore is better than on the Fenix, due to the higher output on the Fenix. If I was out walking a dog and didn't want a really powerful beam, and an inexpensive torch I'd go with the Nitecore, but you can get the Fenix a little cheaper so that might be a better option.

Any ideas on a good smallish torch with a wide beam for close quarters? Don't need anything with long throw at all. When I say smallish, I mean nothing super heavy but it doesn't need to be a tiny keyring job.

Was looking to spend around £30ish on the torch as I need to get some batteries as well so don't want to spend too much if possible. Looking for something that takes the 18650 batteries.

I have seen the BLF A6 come up a lot in this thread but some people have mentioned it doesn't have a great wide beam? Not sure what to go for as there's so many out there to choose from....the M22 Olight looks a good one but it's out of stock at banggood at the moment.

At the moment im EDCing a Eagtac D25C Clicky with a Nichia 219B emitter at the moment.

Not as bright as my other D25Ti , but the natural light and hi CRI wins all the time , everything seems better with it and not overkill using a Cool White LED emitter.

Disaster! one of my 3 Eagletac batteries is now completely dead. The protection cell hasn't tripped either as I've tried resetting it. It won't charge at all.

Damn.

In other news, I'm loving the BLF special edition light a bunch of us bought a while back. So small, so powerful. So right.

I'm no expert, but won't 4xAAAs struggle to provide enough current?

AAA's will be fine - it's not exactly a bright or highly driven flashlight - it only draws 2 amps iirc.

Also still liking my BLF, it's is great! Incredible how much heat is emitted when in high mode (direct drive).

My SC600w MK1 has started to play up, the switch often doesn't register a click and I find myself not getting in to the right mode frequently. It was dropped a while back and the troubles seem to have started since then. Annoying.

As a massive Zebralight fan, I've been eyeing up the Zebralight SC600w Mk III HI for a few months, I actually ordered it last month but then cancelled it. The whole can't use a protected cell issue, was an issue for me. But on reflection, I don't think it is an issue, more of an annoyance.

Is anybody using a normal LED on their bikes?

I bought a Smart 700 Lumen which was superb on my bike and for everything else but I've lost it and I can't get another one.
I've contacted everybody who looks like they're selling them but with no luck.
So I'm after a nice powerful waterproof LED I can use on my bike for £30 or less.

LED Fire torches have a sale on at the moment as they are clearing stock. 15% off of Zebralight, and more discounts off of other brands.

Just had to go for the SC5w - 500 lumens from a single AA cell.

I just took it in to a darkened room and I'm amazed how bright it is. That boost circuit must be a thing of black magic as I'd never had guessed that this kind of output could come from a single AA cell. I have a (now discontinued) H51 also with me, granted it's fitted with a XP-G emitter, but the SC5w even though it's warmer colour temperature completely swamps it. Just demonstrates how far we've come in the last few years with squeezing as much light as possible from a AA cell due to brighter and more efficient emitters and circuitry.

Tint is perfect, more so than my SC600 which can look kinda greenish at lower power levels.

Combined with the fact that my flashguns and flash trigger utilise the same battery, this is perfect to carry with me in my camera bag.

Oh fantastic! I recently lost my much-loved Zebralight SC52w L2 and I'd been eyeing up the SC5w as a replacement for about a week now, so this is perfect timing. Ordered :D

Great timing! That's also a nice light, too nice to lose!

I have gone on a little binge recently, also ordered the SC600w Mkiii HI direct from Zebralight to replace my SC600 Mk1, but I have a nasty feeling it isn't going to reach me in time for a trip. Ordered on Monday and I am not certain but I believe it hasn't even left China yet! Should have chosen DHL rather than EMS.

EMS is pretty speedy, once it's actually been handed over to the postal service it should be with you within a few days, assuming Customs don't decide to bleed you dry for it.

By the way, seeing as you've pictured an Eneloop Pro, are you aware that the Ikea LADDA Low-self-discharge 2450mAh NiMH batteries are now made by Panasonic for IKEA and are literally rebranded Eneloop Pros? £5.50 for four :D :D :D
