Spec me an LED Torch

Hmm, the only thing putting me off all those cheap XML lights is their poor regulation. yes, they might be super bright when you first switch them on but it's a bit disappointing to find out brightness has dropped to half after just 30 mins.

Oh, another thing - those of us with a lot of flashlights - do you go through buying and selling phases?

I've spent a bit recently (Mcgizmo Haiku XML the main expenditure) and as such it's pushed some other lights out of use - for example my 4Sevens Maelstrom G5 isn't getting much use atm so that's going up for sale.

I think I only ever have about 10-15 flashlights in my possession but I've probably bought near 50 over the last couple of years. The "oldest" light in my possession is an ITP EOS 3 on the Westfields keyring.

Whats your "oldest" LED flashlight?

I Go through buying phases, not sold any lights yet though :p :D
If/when you decide to sell your Maelstrom G5 can i have first pick? i've been keen on one for quite a while :)

Finally have my Ultrafire C8 Q5. What a bargain for £6!

But now I want to try the XM-L version, I don't need a torch more than once a month and the q5 is more than adequate but I still want more!

What's the difference between Q5 and an XM-L, is the latter simply a lot brighter?

Sort of, but you can stick it on medium and it'd still be as bright as my 2 x AA Q5 Fenix on max, which starts to dim noticeably from max brightness after around 40 mins. Better to have it and not need it.

That looks pretty awesome actually . £275 is a bit steep for a torch to keep in the car though...

It is a little , although when I'm stood waiting for the police when I get called out because of a break in at work, the illumination is brilliant, and the clobbering weight is also reassuring.;)

Anyways I got both of mine for £175 each (cost price when bought through my company):D, Bargain.

Need a recommendation for a light please.

I would like it to run on a single 18650 and be compact. Something like this sort of size and shape.

http://www.dealextreme.com/p/cree-q5-270-lumen-3-mode-led-flashlight-blue-1x18650-102524

It's going in my bag on night rides, so it's really just going to be a backup and for light if I get a puncture or other issue with my bike. Quite likely to end up with a bit of mud or water on it, so needs to be splash proof I guess and I don't want it breaking at the slightest whack.

Other than that, just not too expensive and available from the UK as I want it before Christmas.

Thanks :).

Morning matey. what's your budget?
As far as lights in that form factor go, i think the shiningbeam S-mini is the best.

Didn't really have a budget. Really have no idea on costs for a decent light. I had a cheap £10 led light from China, that was pretty bright, but that broke after a small hit (rolled off a table) :(, which I can't be having if I'm out.

Ideally my budget is cheap as can be, without it being a piece of junk that's going to break :(.

I see. In that case, it sounds like you need batteries and a charger as well as the light?

Unfortunately there aren't any UK-based retailers that carry non "brand-name" (like 4sevens or Jetbeam) lights that also don't rip you off massively.

I highly recommend the S-mini, even though it's shipped from the US.

As far as a charger and cells go, you definitely want this:

and probably some of these:

If you don't fancy the S-mini, you could try something like this;
http://www.manafont.com/product_info.php/ultrafire-a10b-cree-r2-5mode-250lumen-led-flashlight-p-1747

which should be reasonably durable, but as with all cheap Chinese stuff, there's no guarantee :(

Sorry should have add, the only real requirement off your list would be to be able to use AA batteries with it really. Would probably use the torch for photography and night walks more than anything.

What batteries is everyone using?

I felt like that, i.e. must be AA batteries, but got fed up of the self discharge rates of them, not to mention the reduced power and capacity. So I bit the bullet and bought 18650s, since I wanted to carry on cycling through the winter.

You'd almost certainly be fine for Christmas from Hong Kong. All my recent Hong Kong stuff arrived in 10 days or quicker!

At first glance they look the same size as AA's. I see your point but I also need some batteries for a camera flashgun/s which take AA's so I would have to have two sets and probably two chargers as well. Which leads me on to this! :D

Does anyone own this charger? Was gonna to pair is with 2000mAh enolopes
