Spec my friend a sports car

:D

Have you got one?

My budget's set by what I can get for the Turbo. Ideally I need to find an Exige S owner who wants to swap but I think that's a bit of a long shot.

I had a GT3 and a few other sorts over the years. I'd never EVER buy a Tip as I'm not a soft lad or banker. Had M's, RS4, Tivs etc

So what difference in power is there between the 996 and 997?

I went in Gibbo's 997 and the torque really surprised me, it 'felt' as quick as my Evo, which I wasn't expecting.

Depends on the version of the 996 really as they came with a few different power levels over the years. In my experience my 6 GT3 was as quick as a 6 Turbo even though Turbo drivers were CONVINCED their Turbos were quicker every time you went near Pistonheads. When I had a serious run with my mate in is 7 C2S there was little in it really, GT3 was a smidge quicker, but you could lose that in a gear change. On a runway event with about 70 TVR's and some 6 Turbo's my GT3 was quicker than all of them, consistently over 3/4 mile.

On the same day, I test drove a 996.1 GT3, a 996 Turbo which I bought (with a DMS remap to about 500 BHP) and a 996 GT2.

Standard peak boost pressure on the Turbo is about 0.7 bar; mine runs at 1.1. As expected the mid-range in the Turbo is devastating but the GT3 really pulls at the top end of the rev range.

I didn't have any timing gear and I was too busy watching where I was going to pay much attention to the dials but I'd guess that the Turbo was the fastest of the three, with the GT2 second and the GT3 third. But the GT3 isn't about rampant straight line speed so it's not really comparing like-with-like.

On the road my Turbo is markedly quicker than the 997 C2s and 4s that I've had a play with. I haven't encountered a 997 Turbo to compare them.

I don't think you can compare a DMS mapped car with a standard car, a chipped turbo can be very quick of course but you are telling us the current car is too quick. So I'd suggest if you are looking at an Exige because you want the down to earth feel and excitement at lower speeds a GT3 will give you that and then some. But as you say you can't afford one so that is a moot point. I had a 996 Mk2 GT3 so more power and it was as quick, quicker in fact on the timing at a couple of events, than a standard 996 Turbo. Turbo drivers often confuse in gear go with actual speed as they both deliver their power very differently as you highlighted. The turbo is a better road car and in most hands quicker too, but in terms of real performance a 996 Mk2 GT3 is as quick as a 996 Turbo, but has a level of feedback and event that no turbo or GT2 can get close to.

Ive had a 996 turbo since june (traded up from a standard 996 C2 due to it being a tad slower) but i wouldn't say its too much for the road. Maybe if you live near a school or something and it never goes above 30 mph. I find it amazing, in response to the guy somewhere above i thought a GT2 was around 490 bhp to start with, so it cant have been that much slower than the remapped turbo. What i dont understand is people remapping them, its got around a 4 sec 0 - 60 time why do you need more?

The first iteration of the 996 GT2 (the one I drove) had 456 BHP and weighed about 1480 kg according to the owner's manual, so about 308 BHP/tonne.

The Turbo that I drove (and bought) had 505 BHP and weighed about 1580 kg, so about 320 BHP/tonne. But it also had over 100 lb ft more torque than a standard 996 Turbo which might go some way to explaining why it felt as quick as it did.

I didn't say the GT2 was much slower than the mapped Turbo. ;) It was a guess based on driving them back-to-back on exactly the same roads.

Why do you need the power that a standard one has? Performance cars have nothing to do with need. They're all about want and some people will always want more. :)

I knew how quick the car was before I bought it. That's not the problem. The problem is that it's uninvolving at legal speeds.

I'm too lazy to read the whole thread and just thought I'd post a flippant and hopefully mildly amusing comment :)

Has anyone suggested a Caterham 7 (or similar)? Even the small engined ones are very quick (not 996t quick of course) and HUGE fun to drive around. Since they're unpractical for day to day use you could buy something practical with the change from 25k...

I considered a Caterham/Westfield but I think they're a bit too basic for the kind of journeys I'll be doing.

I'm looking at that kind of car though: a Lotus Exige S is top of the short list at the moment. :)

Not another one of these threads.

It's just a 'Shout out names of cars' threads. It's a waste of time without your friend actually posting here and asking questions himself. Nobody knows what he wants, what his tastes are, his priorities, what his running cost tolerance is, and he isn't here to feed back when people make suggestions either.

All people can do is just post random names of cars you can buy for £25k. Completely pointless and I'd be amazed if there was a car he didnt know existed when he has a car history like that.

Looking at his car history it looks like he should be here telling us about performance metal, not the other way round, anyway!
what fox said :)
