Spec my friend a sports car

So the Turbo still hasn't sold.

I've tried (and eliminated) a few different cars while I've been waiting. My shortlist is now a Lotus S2 Exige S or a Cayman S.

My biggest concern with the Cayman S is the possibility of IMS failure/bore scoring. I used to own a 996 C2 and I'm not sure I want to live with the threat of serious engine failure again.

What MY (if ever) did Porsche change the design to stop these being an issue? Was it 2008?

You can get a OPC warranty on a Cayman S (and Boxster S) for around £800 a year and that'll guard you against most problems, you have to have OPC servicing but I managed to get my Boxster services with brake fluid change and MOT for under £500.

That seems reasonable for a warranty but I wouldn't want to be tied into OPC servicing. IME main dealers are staffed by clueless cretins who should be avoided at all costs.

Just go for the Exige :D

It's a fair opinion and not one that I completely disagree with but they've kept my car on the road and without any major fault now for 7 years and 71k (the same OPC sold the car and has serviced it everytime, I've only owned it for 2.5 years). The warranty is piece of mind and I've found as long as you keep your eyes open and wits about you can make sure they don't pull a fast one.

Well that's the S2 Exige S idea out of the window...

I had a go in an S2 Elise SC yesterday. It's one of the most uncomfortable cars I've ever been in.

I managed to climb in without too many issues but I really couldn't get comfortable in the seat at all. My shoulders were too wide for the upper bolsters, the lumbar support was in the wrong place for my back, my head was touching the roof, and I kept elbowing the owner in the arm every time I changed gear. :o

Plus points: it was ****ing quick; I've never driven anything so responsive and nimble - the steering feel was incredible; the supercharger whine was pure evil.

Minus points: it felt very cheaply-built (probably because it is) and fragile; the exhaust note was rubbish (this one had an aftermarket exhaust too); cabin problems, as above.

My next car has to be able to carry us long distances in comfort as well as being exciting and involving on B-roads, so it looks like the Exige S is off the list...

Time to try a Cayman S...

Please fully star out all swearing in future. Thank you.

How about two cars then, one comfortable and other for hooning?
My girlfriend's already got a sensible car that we use for day-to-day stuff. Mine is used for long journeys at weekends to see friends and family. I can't justify a third car.

I hate it too but its powerful and the most expensive one on pistonheads
Engine power (BHP): 201
Acceleration: 0 to 62 in 8.0 seconds
