SPECTRE Bond24 discussion [Please use spoiler tags when discussing the plot]

Joe public must be too invested in the franchise and aren't open minded enough to accept something different from the Bond cliches and their preconceptions I think.

It's different so it must be better right!?

The Simpsons put it better than anyone:

My thoughts exactly :p

I just think they have lost their charm. They try to make it too serious when in fact much of the plot is still very silly ( ie they take themselves too seriously now). I also just wish he would cheer the **** up as well. I am fed up of seeing Bond with a face like a slapped ass.

They are still OK films (apart from Quantum of Solace, that was awful) but i prefer the previous bonds more.

In all honesty Daniel Craig never really was James Bond.

His Bond has no charm, charisma and is not even remotely funny.

He always has that serious face on him as well. The only thing Craig can do is play the tough guy James Bond which he does well to be fair to him but his Bond just lacks so much compared to how previous actors played him.

Personally I think he is the best Bond. I like his brooding character and he has just edged out Connery as my previous favourite. Moore was ok as a 70s slapstick Bond but everyone else has been poor imho.

However most of Craig's films have left a lot to be desired despite my view of him as a teriffic 007.

I disagree strongly with these charges, but after ten years in the role lets not 'go back there' ffs :p

I would hate to see Moore levels of slapstick return... even Brosnan was too stupid for words at times. I think Spectre will have a bit more humor... Skyfall had its moments... but it need to be be balanced, so it doesn't come off as naff.

God I hate it when someone uses a clip of The Simpsons.

So the first reviews are in and it sounds positive. However I remain very sceptical as I really though Sam Mendes would do an amazing job as a Bond director and Skyfall is probably my least favourite of all the films since Brosnan's last outing.

Skyfall got a wall of 5 star reviews and I just couldn't understand why. It had the worst most hole filled convoluted plot of any film in the last 10 years. It's like they made the script up as they went along. It made no sense.

This I hope is the best film since Casino Royale which I really enjoyed.

I think Skyfall did well because it was such a departure from Casino Royale - the fun was back.

Also, as tech-inclined people, we're probably more likely than any other group to take issue with the plot.

It wasn't the virus / IT stuff that I didn't like with the skyfall plot (although plugging in a rogue laptop intro the MI6 network was a stupid move).

The problem is that the plan Silva hatched to get caught so he could get to M made absolutely no sense at all. It was impossible to hatch as he had no idea how anything up to the point Bond went to Shanghai would play out. I have asked many people to explain the plot to me and nobody has ever even attempted it. I keep wondering if I missed something as I have only seen the film once in the Cinema and really don't want to watch it again. But the fact nobody can explain it when they could explain something that appears far more difficult like The Matrix makes me think I'm right and it just doesn't make any sense.

I don't remember the ins and outs of the plot, but I do recall having the same feeling whilst watching it - it didn't seem immediately clear how you could be certain that you would be in a scenario allowing you to escape. And even then, I'm not sure that I recall the escape being particularly crucial, given that the eventual result was donning a police uniform and shooting their way into a room.

Mind you though, few of them work that hard to fill out every plot gap (not least the repeated 'I'll leave you here to die' scenarios). I guess I accept it in, because it's Bond, when I wouldn't with other franchises.

Bond plots are usually fairly linier though and I tell you what I think. I think originally there was a linier plot that the agents in the other countries were going to be exposed and there was a real threat for Bond to thwart. I also think that originally Silva still had the grudge against M but there was more to it. But at some point they shifted focus to make the film just about the grudge. This then rendered the whole first half of the film completely pointless.

I would love to know the inside story because it just feels like once Bond got to the island the rug was pulled out from under the audience and the film said "Surprise, you know all that background story you just watched, well ignore it, it doesn't mean a thing".

It just felt like a total let down and an insult to the audience who they presumably though wouldn't notice.

I've not been excited about a Bond movie since Goldeneye. They've all looked "meh" in the trailers, and turned out to be "meh" movies as well. This one looks rather good though. I'm feeling the Bondness, and it pleases me.

Casino Royale is excellent. The other two since then less so, Quantum of Solace markedly less so.

Yeah, fair point, I did quite enjoy Casino Royale actually. I'll always prefer the old Roger Moore ones with the cheesy one-liners though ;)

Despite it all, and I agree with all the critics regarding Skyfalls plot [its downright silly at times]... but, I still love the film. You can unpick most Bond plots, and most films for that matter, esp. action movies. Having said that, I hope this one has more plausibility, and fewer holes.

Reviews coming in strong, and the hype train is in full force... I think this will eclipse Skyfalls box office and be the biggest - and maybe best - Bond yet. Its the first in the series I've been following the making of so closely, and I have never been so excited for a film release... right now I would take this over Star Wars if I had to choose; fortunately I don't have too :D

I can't believe I can't get to see it until a week Sunday

So many people have been talking to me about this today... I reckon I might be seeing it a few times in the cinema at this rate.
