Speedlink Medusa 5.1 Headset Owners' Thread

Weird, mine have tons of bass, way too much even. Watching, for instance, the lobby shootout sequence from The Matrix and the whole headphones shake from the bass. I'm sure most people don't have them setup right or something.

Anyway, there's more to music listenning than having sufficient bass, the Medusa just don't produce clear enough sound for music. They don't pick out much detail either. In no sense are they hi-fi headphones.

In no way shape or form do they even come close to being audiophile headphones. They were just very good value for money. I needed something with a decent mike and that was comfortable. The fact they even attempt to do a semblance of 5.1 is laudable but it doesn't come close to having a proper 5.1 speaker set up.

Oh and did somebody mention they were sensitive to electrical interference! :) They start to buzz loudly a good few seconds before my mobile phone rings or receive a text message.

Hi again,

Just a couple of extra notes.

1. I said I don't rate them for music - I also mentioned I have a very good set of headphones for listening to music but to be honest I'd never listen to music in any serious way played through a pc.

2. Bass levels on my set are more than adequate - as someone also said if you want you can have it so high the whole head set vibrates - personally I have it turned down a notch or two :)

A stereo adapter comes with them, so you can use with TV sets etc...

So you can bypass the amplifier? If so, would you recemend this? Before I just adjusted the volume in windows. Can I do this? The amplifier just seems like a major overkill. I dont want to have yet another thing to plug into mains..

Yes, I didn't use the amp for a long while and used it with my PC and TV but you won't get '5.1' without the amp just normal stereo.

Ok, thanks for your replies. I think Im gonna get me a pair of the 3.5mm ones with amp. Il tell you what I think of them when I get them. :)

Can't see the point in getting headphones with 8 speakers in them to only use 2. May as well just buy stereo headphones and get better sound quality for the same money.

agreed. The main point is to get 5.1 surround sound in games where it helps, liek CS, in a headset with a mic. The amp allows seamless switching between headphones and speakers. For £35 I can't fault them for that.

A couple of questions:

1: Does the USB pair reduce noticable performance during games?
2: Do you have to use the amp for the 3.5mm pair? Are they not loud enough If i wernt to use them?

It seems like every pair of headphones I look at there are allways drawbacks.

Either hasnt got mic, dont cover whole ear, look cheap or have crappy some sort of gimmick like vibrations or decoder with batteries. :(

Thanks for relpies.

Im probably one of the few people to have owned both USB and 3.5mm versions. The USB werent bad, very easy to setup, excellent for use with laptop etc. I've not really played much recently thats needed the 5.1 to be spot on but i've not noticed MASSES of difference between USB and 5.1 version :)
Just about over the worst of my (year long) WoW addiction so might pick CS:S etc up again and see if I can get them nice - the USB used to be reasonable in CS:S but fingers crossed the 3.5mm are better. Stuck with onboard sound (envy24) so that might not be helping.

My set arrived today. Bought them from a competitor, very impressed with the packaging. I look forward to making use of these this evening, in combination with my week old X-Fi Xtreme Music.

What sort of improvements should I be able to notice compared to my current logitech gamer headset?

my left front blew out today, still works but it makes a horrible crackling sound when it has to play loud sounds :o ill check out the box to see if theres any warranty left on it, else i'll have to buy myself another set  not sure wether i should go for the usb version this time though as my onboard sound is pretty pap, maybe the usb would be better.

I bought a pair (USB) for my son about 6 months ago. IMHO, I find them to be of poor quality, not only in sound but also of build. They are rather heavy and the padding around the ear is to way too hard and uncomfortable to wear. Also the ear padding is held in place by a thin plasticky material that has too much flexibility and can pop out if you’re not careful...

To be fair they are very cheap to buy and I think you get what you pay for.

I would not recommend them at all and my best advice is to save your money and invest in quality headset; in the long run it will give you more pleasure and pay for itself.

Sorry

=)

PS, make sure you don’t yank the cord near the volume control box because the 4 tiny wires that go into it are poorly soldered and have no fixing to stop them from being overstretched. I think this is also another weak point with these USB Headphones.

exactly what he said. buy sennheiser or sony

Got mine from Overclockers over a year ago. Very pleased with them and no real problems to report . Sound quality is very good for gaming and DVDs although music never sounds quite right. I'm pleased with the positional audio. It's better than stereo but not quite as good as a well placed 5.1 speaker set.

My only real complaint is the interference when my phone goes off.
