Spider web

1) How do you plan on getting spider silk?
2) If it breaks, will you simply tie a knot in it to secure it again?
3) As above, spider farms?
4) Are you drunk?
5) Wait, renewable how?!

1 erm from spiders?
2 No it wont break because its stronger than steel and anything else and that doesnt just break does it?
3 Well we farm cows sheeps and fishes now and bees etc so why not spiders?
4 no
5 Renewable because spiders wont suddenly one day just stop making silk unless we kill them all

OK - if I go and smash my hand through a spiderweb it breaks, doesn't it?

Yes - if it was the same size as steal in quantities it would be strong and I couldn't do that - but it isn't USEFUL is it?

What are you going to build your house out of - Steel, strong reliable and tough, or spider silk, sticky & biodegradable?

This thread is special. Just because something is strong when subjected to a linear pull does not automatically mean it will have great strength under compression which would be much more useful for buildings. I'm not even getting into the rest of the issues with it such as flammability, I don't have the energy.

If you're going to dispute someone who actually quoted a source, at least match it with a more reputable one

Well my info is from polymer expert/scientist David Tirrell and is taken from an article he wrote in the journal Science!!

So yeah believe whoever you wanna believe I really couldn't give a crap tbh!

Useless info: One of the things that Genghis Khan made his men wear were silk undershirts- it didn't stop arrows penetrating the flesh, but instead went with arrow; as it didn't tear (or maybe didn't tear too much), the arrow could then be removed more easily.

well, thats silk silk, not spider silk, but same idea.

Seems to me he's just looking to get his post count up for free shipping.

I mean surely. This thread can't be a real debate, It's stupidity and nothing more.

Well all of you who are doubting me obviously know it is a pretty good idea but u are probably jealous you didnt think of it first. It might not work who knows im sure whoever invented flying got laughed at at first

Invented flying? You mean...

..the Fly? or whatever winged beast was around first?

I am sure the T-Rex' were all laughing there guts out at the Pterodactyls as they tried to fly around.

Rich

<EDIT>

To clarify I am not jealous - this convosation has been banded about since the discovery that spider silk is stronger weight for weight than steel.

I do however want you to start a spider silk farm and start business, and make a thread about it (pardoning the pun - silk, thread...) as it will be hilarious to see the consequences.
