Split Air con

£7500 fully installed inc electrics and comissioning, west midlands, with the standard 5 year parts warranty, 12 months labour warranty
from googling around probably on the higher end of the scale, but i guess installers are so swamped with work they get to charge what they want
how's your quote looking like?
Thats about what ive been quoted so i might try firing back your setup and see what they say, if they can make it work.

just make sure you've calculated your heat loss/cooling requirements correctly!

also note that with heat pumps (aka outdoor units), oversizing is not always a good idea
oversized units = short cycling rather than running at their lowest modulation = less efficient and also shortens the lifespan

Thanks, ive also just had the heads up on planning permission as well, we are semi-detached and so can only have 1 unit outside under permitted development apparently.

Do you know the model numbers for the indoor units you are having fitted?
Ensure your installer gives you a copy of the MCS020a calculations to show that the system is <37dBA at the nearest reference point (1m perpendicular from the window of the neighbours nearest habitable room). If there is any query, your local planning authority will ask you for this, and if you are unable to demonstrate it is compliant they may issue an enforcement notice to have it relocated or removed.

Calculations look about right we are right between the 6.8kW and 8.0kW requirements and that’s why they were speccing 2x external units very likely the 2x40 units.

Our bedrooms are south facing with 2x windows in each so need 2.0-2.5kW which is why I can understand rhem wanting to run the 2 bedrooms off one unit and then we have a playroom and study where we would need a 2.5kW and only a 1-1.5kW unit, but sticking to that upper end 1.5kW in the study as I do cardio exercise in there.

I have someone coming to quote in a few weeks for a Daikin split with three internal units. Unfortunately it’s looking like all three will need a condensate pump. I’m reading some horror stories regarding the pumps. Noisy and causing vibrations. For those with condensate pumps how are you finding them?

Mixed bag.

We have one unit at home which is pumped because it was unavoidable, the others are all gravity. The pumped unit at home only sees low use (and it's not a bedroom) so we've heard no noise and it's been ok so far.

On the flip side we have a few of these wall mounted FCUs at work which are all pumped and the pumps are truly hateful. They fail every year or two, **** water out of the ceilings onto everything below and they're regularly very noisy too. If I had to every unit pumped, I'd have not installed our AC at home at all. I only compromised because it was one low use room and it was the only way. I'd recommend finding another way to make gravity drains work if you can.

Tried the Aspen Mini Lime, this sits in the AC trunking and was too loud, moved to the Aspen Silent+ Mini Orange, this sits in the loft and is silent.

Keep your AC drains clean and the pumps should last a long time.

We booked ours in for next May (need to save up). Daikin stylish 4 way split with 3 units upstairs. The forth is going in my office at some point not long after.

Just had a seemingly good bloke come to check our house for air con…he suggested instead of ac indoor units in all of the bedrooms (10m sq, 12m sq, 5m sq) we could have a 6kw system on the landing (small) servicing the rooms. Is this a bad idea? We’d also have a 4.2kw machine in the kitchen both serviced by a 10kw outdoor unit.

You'll have a very cold landing with the unit sitting at its target temperature and moderately cooler bedrooms/surrounding areas.

He seemed to suggest with an appropriately specced unit it’d have no issue cooling the rooms to desired temp. Annoying :-(

I mean they will be cooler, but as mentioned your landing will be very cold. I have a unit in my kitchen and lounge that I put on when the down stairs is really warm, and it does provide some cooling to my office on the same floor. But it’s not in the same league as the rooms with units.

When you are sleeping you’ll want a unit in the bedroom with the door shut so that it can hit the desired temp and then tick over. One on the landing will be going hard all night otherwise and you’ll not get much of a decrease in your bedrooms.

I’m planning on doing this. I follow a guy on TikTok who’s been installing AC for many years - BSP. He’s installed many systems on the landing and people are over the moon with them.

I originally had this and it worked to a fashion, it took the edge off but having one in the room in much better in my personal experience.

or you could get a 6.8kw unit servicing all the rooms. a bit awkward needing to keep your bedroom doors open to keep the rooms cool i'd have thought?

this is my spec and it's near enough the sizes of your rooms:
Living Room
FTXM25A
2.50kW • Wall-mounted
Bedroom
FTXM20A
2.00kW • Wall-mounted
Bedroom 2
CTXM15A
1.50kW • Wall-mounted
Bedroom 3
CTXM15A
1.50kW • Wall-mounted

Outdoor Unit — Daikin
5MWXM68A9
6.80kW Cooling • 9.60kW Heating

living room = 14.6 m2
bedroom 1 = 12.6 m2
bedroom 2 = 10.8 m2
bedroom 3 = 5.5 m2

10kw outdoor unit
