Split Air con

Thats really quick! However, it all depends on the quote. Was your quote competitive compared to others?

Hi yes definatley competative with other companies (South London/Surrey area - not as cheap though as the "mate for cash" rates quoted earlier in the thread but I would not expect that) and I appreciated what seemed like fair advice. I think the quick turnaround was luck on my part for ordering the right parts (I was recommended the Zen units by a pal at work who had his whole house done).

Looking forward to it!

Jacob was round here just now and again provided some very useful alternatives that i didnt realise was possible. I mentioned this thread and again he seemed happy his name is being spread positively. I was originally thinking of 1 unit in each of the bedrooms but he suggested having 1 in the loft with vents in each bedroom so its aircon in all the rooms :) Depending on the quote its highly likely i will have this done.

vents I guess are more expensive than the wall ac unit? how much more expensive is it then?

Surprisingly in my situation it should work out cheaper (I had planned to have 1 unit each in each bedroom but Jacob mentioned that it will be cheaper due to 1 unit, less materials and labour. However, i wont know until he actually provides me with the quote but he did suggest that the vent would work out cheaper.

Only downsides of ceiling concealed is the option to control the individual rooms / areas - also they would need to ensure the air flow and returns are balanced.

So unsure what would be the best option. A local company quoted me £4.5k for 4 x daikan units (1 dining room, living room and each bedroom) which would provide good cooling to the kitchen too as we have a conservatory and a south facing garden. I recently had Sub Cool FM also quote me on the following option 1 x unit in loft providing cooling to 3 bedroom via grill and 1 x 5kw in living room to cool majority of downstairs and the price was very similar to the £4.5k. I could add another unit for in the dining room to cool the kitchen (Enter kitchen via dining room) but this would take the total cost to around £5k.

What rooms do you spend most of your time in? You might find it expensive to run if you do plan to attempt to cool the conservatory but if you like to spend a lot of your time in there then perhaps that would be worth it for you.

I do wish I could have added my living room to my install but it would have required a separate external unit due to the location it is in the house. Leaving the doors open to my 3 bedrooms that have AC does help keep the living room cool if I keep the kitchen door shut (kitchen is at the back of the house with a lot of sun after mid day).

I also have the solar film installed on my windows at the back of the house which really helped a lot. I did not have it installed until end of August last year though so looking forward to seeing the temps in the kitchen this year if we get some more of the 37c days.

Ended up going with 1 unit in living room, 1 dining room facing kitchen entrance and the ducted unit to cool all 3 bedrooms in the loft :) Deposit paid and due to start in April

When I had mine installed in the dinning room to also cool the living room (French Doors separate the two spaces) it cooled the kitchen down quite a lot in the heat last year which I was impressed with.

Sounds a good setup, with the two downstairs that should do quite well - worse case you might have to use a fan to assist cool air into the kitchen.

Jacob mentioned it would work but that would mean the living room would also be really cold in order to assist the dining room. Thought it would be easie to have there own seperate units so the Living room wouldn't have to be freezing cold.

It sounds like it is going to be a very slick setup! I look forward to some pics next month ;)

But isnt gas cheaper than electricity?

You tend to get more efficiency out of a Split in Heat Pump mode at certain ambient conditions than you would do with Gas.

Check the details of the units this should show the power input vs heating performance (COP - Higher the number the more efficient the unit)

I'd be surprised with the current gulf between the fuel prices....

Those of us without a gas supply this is by far the best heating solution available.
