Split Air con

Just wondering if the prices above seem good? He seemed to prefer to fit Daikan as he mentioned they are good and quiets etc. Also, he mentioned that these are cheaper to heat your home compared to Gas? In terms of running cost how have you guys found them?

I always take this claim with a pinch of salt.

As they use heat transference, they are typically 3-400% efficient, this means 1KwH of electric usage would give roughly the same effect as 3-4KwH of a heater/cooler.

The thing falls over though when 1 KwH of electric is 5x the cost of 1KwH of gas. In raw cost terms I don't see how it could beat a gas boiler at current prices. If electric gets cheaper or gas climbs in relation to electric costs then yes, maybe eventually. Sadly electric just goes up year on year for me rather than getting cheaper.

From what I recall our installer saying - it's a better option for replacing Night Storage heating or some other crappier heating method - because running a whole boiler and rad system from scratch is much more involved and costly than just sticking a few AC Units up on the external walls. But as for being cheaper than proper central heating - mmmm not so sure. From an environmental standpoint at least the Electricity can be green (potentially) whereas gas never will be

While I agree, there are a couple of flaws. Gas boilers are not 100% efficient. Air con units will not achieve 3-400% when it’s very cold outside (when you need the most heating!) and will drop below that. The colder it gets the worse the efficiency.

There will be times when it’s better, but overall if you have a boiler already, it will be cheaper to use that. They will be better than using straight electric heating.

Yeah, I think if buying to save money with a decent CH system in place then it would be a mistake. Having a system that can cool in the summer is the main use for it, and having a backup heating supply in case of boiler failure is nice.

So im looking at have the air con installed and was given the following prices (Cash job so excludes VAT) fitted including electrics:

£4.5k - 4 Daikan units on 1 condenser

£1.3k - 1 Daikan Unit 1 condenser

£2.7k - 2 Daikan unit 1 condenser

I had 1 Daikin into 1 condenser (cash) and it was £900 inc electrics

my brother paid £1.5k 2 units into 1, cash again, all in

re running costs. only used in summer for cooling and not noticed any huge change to bills

Wish I had aircon already upto 24-25 C the sun just seems to heat up the window and the bedroom quickly heats up.

Where do you live the Algarve?

I'm in Devon and the hottest my south facing master bedroom got in the height of the heatwave last year was 27c during the day. The trouble being opening a window defeats the object of the building insulation as all the hot air comes in.

So really AC has a double benefit of being able to keep the window shut and make the room a comfortable temperature.

I'm thinking of installing a system in my living room this year, not for necessarily for cooling although it would be nice, but the heating aspect of it I find with the fan it circulates around the room far better than a radiator which by the time it's up to temp the room can be too hot almost it doesn't have the same precision.

I live in the northwest lol, this probably explains why I was getting the Xbox console failures etc due to heat years back, I use a @Thermpro thermometer I bought from amazon last year the Max recorded temp is actually 36.2 recorded sometime last August I believe, overnight we’ve had outside temps down to may be -2 in the last week or so but will never drop below 18 c inside. 18 start to feel a little too cold for me though.

I’d expect west facing rooms to get hotter, as the sun sets its shining directly into the whole room after being slowly warmed up all day by the sun. Peek temps tend to be from 2-3pm.

Where as sour facing the sun will be overhead or at a more extreme angle. It’s cooler on the AM when east facing windows are getting full sun.

Thanks Rotty, i have contact Sub Cool for a quote too

Thanks to all on this thread I had sub-cool visit for a survey yesterday and am going for 2 Mitsubishi Zen on a single outdoor unit. Jacob was very helpful and knew about this thread when I mentioned it. Looking foward to commiting all the portable units to guest room duty!

I so want to get them back to do my living room and maybe even the kitchen. I have to keep telling myself I do not need it in every room in the house..... (oh but I do!!)

@RJC - will that replace the one you installed in your hall way? That'll be a nice upgrade :)

Indeed, so impressed with the one installed downstairs and that the hallway does not want to ramp up to full load is annoying.

Also saves having the fan in the door way to cool the room down.

Hehe it will be a massive upgrade :D

What will you do with the old unit? Have you got a garage you could stick it in (mainly for heating)?

Jacob was round here just now and again provided some very useful alternatives that i didnt realise was possible. I mentioned this thread and again he seemed happy his name is being spread positively. I was originally thinking of 1 unit in each of the bedrooms but he suggested having 1 in the loft with vents in each bedroom so its aircon in all the rooms :) Depending on the quote its highly likely i will have this done.
