**SPORE**

People really should learn by now... All these games get hyped up and people get excited about them. They just turn out to be a pile of ****.

How is it pathetic? , different people are giving their views of the game... Most don't like it but thats the way it goes sometimes ;)

It's pathetic because everyone is acting like they didn't know what to expect. Practically everything in the game has been showcased in gameplay videos and interviews with Will Wright, nothing has been cut from the game, and it's been marketed as a "family game" since forever.

I must be the only one around here who was actually paying attention, because I didn't raise my expectations above what we were shown and that's exactly what was delivered. Frankly, if you're surprised about anything in Spore then you've not paid attention for the last three years.

Used the wrong word , the post still stands though :p

Why? OcUK doesn't like games and people around here do love to nitpick. On this page someone has said they wanted this to be like Civ. It would have taken the whole of 5 minutes to watch a review video, read one, look at any of the pre-release information to know this game wasn't Civ.

I am truely glad for anyone who enjoys this game, alas, I do not. As I posted earlier, I just feel this game to be a total let down, boring/repetitive/linear and rather goalless. I'm just trying to finish the Civ stage to see if the space has any hope of reviving the game for me, but as that about 4/5 through the game, I don't see this last stage will make the game suddenly feel like fun for me. Especially as you cannot go online and visit other people's planets for social or war reasons, apart from sharing what your creature looks like, whooope dooo!

Like someone has stated, it is indeed like marmite, you either hate it or love it. I think anyone who enjoyed SIMS(and to a lesser extend DOGZ & CATZ), will probably endup enjoying this game a lot. But for people who were hoping a more openended game like CIV or more ability to explore the universe with other people online and visit their planet for social or warlike interaction, you will be soarly disappointed.

There is a lot of 'Dry Cracker Syndrome' with people and this game though. ie, you have been starving for a while and someone hands you a dry cracker, you think it the best meal you ever had, but its still just a dry cracker. I'm sure that most people who love the initial look and feel of this game will pretty soon get bored and it will be left to gather dust.

The 2 releases after this dry summer, Space Siege and Spore, have both been major letdowns for me, lets hope for something, anything to come along before Xmas and revive my faith in games.

But for now, I say no thank you, I will not pay £££ for a dry cracker, my bookcase is already full of them, gathering dust.

Try learning to read!

Ok,those who don't like it,stay out, we understand it isnt for all. Those who did like it, explain why? Has it got you addicted? Are you enjoying the 'light hearted' gaming?

Got to say I'm really enjoying it, although it feels a bit rushed. As you can't stop yourself from evolving. Also the stats don't stack in any way. So you might as well just have one mouth at 5 bite.

You know you were worried you were starting to sound like a fanboy? Well, you are.

Anything you liked in the video will not have made retail. That's a pretty good rule of thumb. Each phase is so stupidly simplistic a 5 year old could probably do it. You can put arms in your *** and rocketlaunchers under your tank and it'll still show the same crappy animations. This is pretty much like a shovelware wii game. It has no depth whatsoever. In civ phase, you can make LAND, SEA, AIR, units, no matter how you designed it, it'll fire the same way and you'll barely see the details. Even the water tiles conflict. Nothing you create in any phase except the cell phase has any function whatsoever. And the second phase is like some really shallow mmo, you grind enemies or play simon says tons of times til you evolve.

*Gives you the OcUK kewl klub membership card and decoder ring.*

Lol!

I agree with you Ulfhedjinn, this game has always promised and show cased. People buy the game and then complain that it isn't what they expected?!?

@ naysayers =- Didn't you watch any of the videos?!?!

I am enjoying the light hearted atmosphere of Spore, and the way it lets you make full use of your creativity. IMO this is one of those games that is as boring or exciting as you make, and as long or short as you make it, because your own imagination basically drives the game. In my case I happen to be an extremely imaginative person, so I enjoy seeing all my ideas come to life on the screen and I'm sure the target audience (12 and up) will go crazy over this game.

Add to that the fact that it's basically every genre of game wrapped up in one package and I'm having trouble getting bored. I often get burned out playing a game very quickly, even if it's something really in-depth like Civilization or something, so I end up installing about nine games and jumping between them. With this game it somehow keeps my attention even though it's not very in-depth at all compared to other games I play, the constantly changing atmosphere and gameplay keeps me entertained.

Also, it appeals to the megalomaniac in me. I can play God, literally, and on a more involved level than previous god games I have loved like Black & White. Black & White does its job well, giving you the power to control peoples lives, but in this game you not only control their lives but you create life and evolve it as well on pretty much every level. It's genius to me. :D

You know you were worried you were starting to sound like a fanboy? Well, you are.

Again, everything shown in the videos for the last three years is in the game. There should be absolutely no surprises whatsoever unless you have been living under a rock.

It's okay though, enjoy nitpicking the game and trying hard to find reasons to hate it. ;)

It seems they didn't watch or read anything about Spore prior to launch, bad buying habits?

Im going to do a try before I buy, if you get me;)

If I do like it, im definately buying it. I didnt really know much about this game until this thread, so looked round on other sites etc to get more info, see what type of gameplay it is etc. Looks like the type of game I would enjoy. I mean I enjoyed Sim City Societies while everyone else banished it to hell. I enjoy single playes as much as multiplayers as long as the gameplays right so not bothered about that.

I agree, i havent actually played it yet, my daughter too it upstairs as soon as it arrived yesterday, the very fact that a 13 year old girl has been desperate for months to play the game, is a sure sign that its a family game.

My kids loved the sims, now they love spore, i know i probably wont like it, but ill give it a try sometime no doubt.

Just popped into a game retailer on the way home and picked up a copy. Nice to see it's both PC and Mac on the same disc. I'll resist installing it on the MBP and install it on the gaming PC.

At least you're getting off to a good start, you seem to actually know what the game is supposed to be and I think you'll be able to look at it objectively as someone who's not really part of the intended audience. It might just suck you in anyway though! :p

I judge this game based purely on what it is; a 12+ family game intended to provide good, clean fun for people with creative minds. Judging it based on that I can't see any major flaws in it (apart from the difficulties I've had with the terrain, which is pretty terrible at times).

I think most people here have either been living under a rock, and completely missed the point of what the game is intended to be and who it's aimed at, or they just got their expectations up far too high despite the fact that almost all elements of the game were demonstrated to us in videos and interviews with Will Wright. In either case I can't see how it's the fault of the game.

What the hell? This attitude means you'll never hear anything bad
I personally am thankful for any criticism as well as the raving reviews, I don't want to make up my mind based on only one side of the debate!

Would you join scientology because all scientologists say its great?
