SS2

eBay, bargain bins, old stock in various computer stores... as far as I know, it hasn't been released for quite some years now. It is difficult to buy.

i found two wrenches last night while i was playing hoping to dual wield them :p ill keep one and bin the other. you know the menu where you keep your items, does it ever increase to carry more?

IIRC you need to increase your strength stats to carry more items. It will say in the manual anyway...

no manual. it was a disk in a sleeve unfortunately. thats why i paid 3 quid for it lol. oh well. thanks for sharing though, gona have a quick bash now before tea

loved this game! just downloaded the demo to try it out once again... cant get it working on xp :(

Demo doesn't work for me in XP either. The full version does once patched, sometimes you need to set the compatibility mode in XP for that application too.

yeh i did and it works for me and im on 64bit vista :p

anyhoo, bit of an update, im up to the deck after locating that guy for his keycard, he dies and two shotgun hybrids come through the door. i havent got any further than that yet. havent had chance. although i do have an excellent condition shotgun with loads of pellets (explosive and normal) and i cant use it because im not strength of 3 yet :( bah lol. any tips on what to upgrade and what not to upgrade? im hacker level 2 and thats about it.

Here's a few tips for someone just getting into the game:

• Stick with the Wrench for as long as possible, you'll need all that ammo later!
• Try to keep security offline indefinitely (Hack Skill required). Some of the cameras can be hard to spot until it's too late, plus it'll stop security turrets from targeting you too.
• Make sure you investigate every nook and cranny. Can't stress this one enough. There are lots of nanities (cash) and cybermodules (skill upgrade points) hidden behind benches, computer panels, etc.
• Research Level 1 is the highest you'll ever really need, don't waste the cybermodules. If you need Level 2 then install the Research Implant temporarily (you'll find one sooner or later).
• Repair is a useless skill. Just make sure you get a fairly decent Maintenance level to keep your guns in tip-top condition.
• Don't bother with Energy weapons. They may look pretty but they are very weak, especially in later levels.
• The Mini-Map is your friend. Enable it by hitting 'M' during gameplay and ticking the box.
• The default shortcut key for listening to that PDA you just found is 'U'. If you need to listen to it again click the PDA icon in your inventory (at the bottom of the screen).
• Jot all the key-codes you find down on a piece of paper. It may be five levels until you need to use the code and you don't want to be looking through hundreds of pda messages to find it again.
• Your inventory will get filled up too quickly if you attempt to take everything around with you. Just find a nice safe room somewhere and dump everything in it, that way if you need something later you'll know where it is.

For those of you with dual-core processors and having problems with the game not working:

• Load the game up to the main menu (if you can't get this far then it's another issue, sorry).
• Hit CTRL, ALT and DELETE to minimize the game and bring up Task Manager.
• Locate SHOCK2.EXE (or SHOCK2.ICD) running in the list of processes.
• Right-click on it and choose "Set Affinity".
• You are presented with a box with lots of possible CPU cores. On dual-core processors you should have CPU0 and CPU1 ticked while everything else is grayed out.
• Untick ONE of the boxes, so that just the one is still enabled (I don't think it matters which you leave enabled).
• Close Task Manager and return to the game by clicking it on your task bar.
• Turn the lights off, put some headphones on and have clean underwear on standby. Enjoy the game. :D

Hope this helps someone. :)

Hey tauren, i see you managed to get this working on vista x64, could you please tell me how? had this game sat in the drawer for years and decided to install it recently, it installs fine but whenever i try to play it i just get a system shock 2 has stopped working window :(

Have you patched it? Have you read the post further back in the thread? It had details there...

The patch is available from Irrational Games website.

Yeah i installed the patch, before i patched i got a warning saying it didnt work, so i patched and now no warning, just doesnt start up

hi, basically i patched it. then run it with the settings for windows xp or windows 2000, they both work for me, change the SShock2.exe to run with either the xp settings or win2000. it should work, if not then im not sure why.

thanks for the tips though Timmy. im gonna play it now i think. :D

Timmy should really reference the materials he quotes ;)

Anyhow, no need to note down the keycodes. All you need to do is click on the "notes" section of your interface and you'll most likely be able to hunt them down much faster that you'd be able to sort through piles of post-its.

Another tip is to try out the ADOAB patch. It basically fixes loads of bugs and balance issues in the game and is probably even worthwhile for a first playthrough of the game.

After that there's always the randomisation mod which mixes up the placement of absolutely loads of stuff in the game.

Then you've got the FMs. I recommend Arena and/or anything by Christine from the ttlg forums :)

Yeah - this is a good. point. It also helps if the room you choose is close to the central elevator. Also, try to remember the locations of all the chemical rooms. Certain chemicals which are required for research can only be found in a single room.

You need research skill, then you will be able to research the item. Some of the research items are useful, for example they will allow you to do more damage to a particular enemy, or in one case allow you to take health-giving items from the corpses of certain enemies. IIRC you can also research some of the weapons you find lying around.

sweet, cheers :D

i havent had any crashing yet but i have had all the textures go a purplish colour, i have to restart the whole game then. e.g exit and reload it.

Have you tried the hyperthreading/dual-core fix? It's on the ttlg.com forums linked to earlier.

Although it may look like a copy & paste job, I can assure you I typed that out myself especially for the good folk here at overclockers. :(

Ah, fair enough :) It looked incredibly similar to a list I've seen somewhere else before.

Thats strange OP I've just installed the game myself this weekend. I played it years back at uni, but seeing the lack of quality games about now I decided to play playing it again a second time (got stuck 1st time) and I truely think this is one of the best games of all time. Its defo in my top 5, possibly top 3, or maybe top 2, it just oozes class.

How much did you pay for it by the way?
