SS2

As already mentioned, I really do recommend the fan-missions. The quality is just outstanding, some even contain new logs, textures and objects!!!

I've never been that amazed by most of the FMs. "Proov" was the first good one. Then "Ponterbee Station" and "Arena". "Return to the UNN" I found quite hard to get into. It just felt a bit too chaotic and without being too harsh, the quality of the first few audio logs put me off (not so much the voice acting as the really really awful recording quality).

The mods such as ADOAB, SecMod and Random (by Zygoptera, not my own abortive project of a similar name) are generally more fun than the FMs.

There's quite an old FM that's voiced by someone with an amusing fake Australian accent which is quite entertaining, too...No idea of it's name off-hand, though.

Yeah, I agree with you about the logs... but the level design, attention to detail and overall effort put into these fan missions is, in my opinion, unmatched.

Haven't tried the mods yet... filtered at work, will look into them when I get home.

Strange I've been running it happily with Winxp and not needed to update anything. When I start the game it says this game is not conpatible with winxp and to go to the EA website, but I press continue and it runs fine.

One question to the SS2 heads around here. I'm also running the original unpatched build (1.15). Should I patch the game?

You should def patch it. The original version contained a lot of bugs, including some which could make the game impossible to complete.

Patch it, install at the very least shtup and have le fun ;)

Have you tried the hyperthreading/dual-core fix? It's on the ttlg.com forums linked to earlier.

Ah, fair enough :) It looked incredibly similar to a list I've seen somewhere else before.

yeah have tried everything still crashes :(

As others have said, UNN Nightwalker & Ponterbee station (both by same author, from what I remember one continues the story of the other) are brilliant fan missions (and long - good few hours!).

Anyway, Bioshock?

Thats strange OP I've just installed the game myself this weekend. I played it years back at uni, but seeing the lack of quality games about now I decided to play playing it again a second time (got stuck 1st time) and I truely think this is one of the best games of all time. Its defo in my top 5, possibly top 3, or maybe top 2, it just oozes class.

How much did you pay for it by the way?

3 quid out of the back of someones car. :D im a bit stuck in the engineering deck. i always seem to get killed or on such low health that one shotgun hybrid can own me.

The more I read about Bioshock, the more it sounds like system shock 2 (minus Shodan of course). Which is a good thing, don't get me wrong!

...even down to the "you're all alone with only a voice in your ear to guide you", and the "expand the story through collecting logs" principles. Of course the general game style and atmosphere seem very similar as well.

Personally I can't wait. My only concern is that it's also coming out on console, and I've yet to see a game which worked well on both platforms (take Deus Ex 2 as an example :( )

If Bioshock is half as good as SS2 it will be game of the year.

Cool. 3 quids a deal for SS2.

Get some research done on the bit of flesh you find on the zombies, once its done you'll inflict more damage when you hit them. Get some hacking skills too.

Thing is I've saved the game and I'm 6 hours into it and doing rather well (touch wood). Can I apply the patch to my save games?

Hmmm.. This might be a bit dodgy.

You could always make a backup of your SS2 folder and if things screw up, revert :)

In /re to the crashing issue someone else mentioned. It really really sounds like the multithreading/dual-core problem. It might be worth double-checking the fix to make sure it's properly in place. Alternatively, there's a pre-patched .exe on strangebedfellows that fixes this and a number of other bugs (note that you'll need to patch the game with the official patch first).

I believe that one bug can actually prevent you from finishing the game... so the patch is a must. Better to have to restart now than much, much later...

Browse to your System Shock 2 folder (c:\games\sshock2 by default) and make copies of all the folders beginning with save_ (save_01, save_02, etc).

Hope this helps.
