SS2

So is it posible to play this game at higher res? like 1680x1050?? might look good at that and the high res pack on.

Oh and will it work in Vista x64?

Just answered my own question about Vista.. it said this program has known issues etc, and crashes on launch. I'm gonna boot into XP and see if I can get this little gem going. I've had it in me cupboard for years, just gathering dust.

People have got it working in Vista (see the forum on ttlg.com) but, like XP, it's luck of the draw more often than not.

The game only supports the following resolutions (some of which you have to manually edit into the config file):

640x480
800x600
1024x768
1280x1024
1600x1200

I used to play with 1600x1200 with forced 16x AF, 8xQ AA and all texture upgrades and model packs. The game certainly didn't look bad at all, and this all happily ran on fairly old hardware (7800GTX, and poss a 6800GT but my memory isn't 100% on that one).

from the irrational games website faq:

Q. Will the patch destroy my savegames?
A. No, the patch will not affect current savegames.

for those that cant get this working in XP trust me it does - i finally got it working last night.

turn compatibility mode off completely as it did nothing and if you have even a reasonably modern video card add this line to the shock.cfg file in the root install folder:

safe_texture_manager

this makes the game ignore the fact that modern video drivers do not report texture info in the same way anymore which games based on the dark engine didnt like (ala thief and SS2)

cheers,

Try the safe texture manager fix mentioned above. Also try the fixed SS2 .exe from ttlg.com (make sure you've patched the game with the official patch first).

It says make sure use folder names are set to enabled? how do I do this?

And can anyone link me to that ss2.exe I cant find it on the site its gone.

Its just hard locking in vista now. :(

If you get very good performance at 1024x768 and you have at least a 17" monitor try this:

Open cam.cfg in notepad.
Find the line that reads:
Code:

game_screen_size 1024 768

and replace it with
Code:

game_screen_size 1600 1200

and then you will have Shock2 at 1600 x 1200.
Or 1280x1024 if you please.

If a resolution setting does not work the game will fall back to 640x480.

OH FFS!!

Screw this damn game, I have tried everything and managed to get it running but now I just get random lockups. Im gutted as I wanna play it. :(

Yeah I have, but I'll look again thanks. Its so frustrating, it just locks up on me and the sound loops.

I got a feeling its the System Shock 2 Multithread/XP Fix but I cant find the file /SS2MTFIX.EXE

to fix it. :(

You do realise that it isn't abandonware - EA own the rights to system shock in the same way ubi have the Far Cry name.

from the offical TTLG forums

Copyrights are not considered abandoned even if they are no longer enforced, so the software does not enter the public domain just because they are no longer commercially exploited or widely available.

For the record, Jeff Brown (Executive President, Corporate Communications at EA) says:

"We pride ourselves in aggressively protecting our intellectual property rights, and we frequently pursue those who try to distribute our games without permission."

There are no titles in the Electronic Arts library that they consider to be abandonware.

Official word from Irrational: "No, System Shock 2 is not abandonware, please don't warez it"

Consider this the final word from TTLG on the subject of System Shock 2's status. Unless we hear otherwise directly from EA and Irrational, all instances involving the sharing of SS2 will be considered piracy.
