SSD in my Mac Pro *updated with performance figures* (and video)

Meh.

Booted my Mac Pro into Windows 7 for the first time in months, downloaded the OCZ firmware, downloaded Acrobat reader so I could view the documents.

Firmware updater doesn't even recognise that there's an SSD connected. Did the registry change, rebooted, still noting.

Booted back into OS X.

Is it worth the hassle of updating the firmware. I bought mine about a few weeks ago and it came with the last firmware rather than the very latest.

Here are my results:

I had the same Feek.

Turns out i had to HDDErase the SSD in the end for the firmware updater to pick it up, it wouldn't pick it up when it was formatted for Mac OS.

I just SuperDupered the SSD before i wiped it, updated then restored the backup.

I run SuperDuper! daily anyway so I could always boot from my SuperDuper! backup to do it.

It appears my drive has version 1.10 so it's quite out of date.

I couldn't quickly find a list of all changes since 1.10 but it's probably worth doing the update.

Hmm my original vertex:
Capacity: 128.04 GB (128,035,676,160 bytes)
Model: OCZ-VERTEX
Revision: 1.6

So there is newer firmware revisions out there. I had to get Tony et al at OCZ to email the prehistoric versions from v1275 to get the drive to the point it could be updated with the oldest publicly available firmware.. it was that old!

That's how i'm looking at the moment.

Is it possible that the CPU is bottlenecking these SSDs? We seem to have two discrete results for the vertex 2 here; 300ish and 260ish.

I am just getting a macbook pro 17" i5 today and am looking at getting an SSD, I am looking at either the Vertex 2e 240gb or the Crucial C300 256GB, which would you guys recommend? I read somewhere the vertext has better handling of garbage? cheers for the help!

If you can wait until the new year, go for the intel third gens. They are going to be pretty amazing apparently. Other than that, go for the Vertex 240GB. You won't regret either of the drives I've mentioned. ;)

Is it worth backing up my SSD onto another HDD, formatting it then cloning it back over? Would it be better to stick it in a PC for TRIM and update the firmware?

The HDD is Crucial M225. It's been running fine but a bit slower since I put it in about a year or so ago I think.

Formatting it wont solve the problem, see here;

You should stick it in a pc to update the firmware though.

Gents

I was going to stick one of these into my 2010 Macbook Pro after Xmas, any know issues? I've read about using the 1.11 firmware to stop the freezing issue some poeple have seen?

Thanks

I've got the 120GB version of this, I'm not on the latest firmware (1.22 which is the version that shipped with it) and I've not a single problem with this drive. In fact, I've had less problems with the SSD than any HDD I've ever owned.

Excellent thanks, going to go for the 60gb and put all my downloads and other bits on an external drive..... got a 7200rpm in at the moment, was it a nice performance boost?

Nice performance boost is an understatement. It's like going from a 56k modem to 10Mbps broadband. Once you have it, it's too hard to go back.

There is no way I'd have a HDD for my OS ever again, I'm sticking to SSDs from now on.
To give you an idea on the speed increase, it felt like going from my mum's 1.7GHz P-M laptop to the 12GB Ram, i7 machines we have in my department, the speed increase was that dramatic.

You honestly never realise how much of a bottleneck the hard drive is until you switch, better than overclocking CPU/Ram any day!

Excellent!!

Can't wait to get one installed in the new year, my current 7200rpm has a slight hum to it and kicks out some heat + drains the battery more than the stock 5400rpm so I'm hoping to have a nice nippy, cool running, quite MBP once installed.... Will probably do a fresh install as well :)

Thanks for the feedback ;)
